Hi Dave, my brother has a vw van of some description. His leisure battery has swelled out but he doesn't know why. The battery seems to be a specialty it's an SPV 70 which appears to be 1050 amps. He's struggling to get like for like and I've never heard of this particular battery, do you have any idea if he can replace it with a standard leisure battery of the same physical dimensions. I didn't realise batteries came at 1050 amps. Thanks for any help.

That sounds like a CCA rating Paul. Cold Cranking Amps which I believe are for starting rather than leisure.

A quick Google shows that the 1050A would be delivered for 30 seconds at 0 degrees.

There are masses of different Transporter builds from VW, so hard to say what is standard. However, when they fit an Auxilary Battery as part of the factory build it is often just a 60Ah or 70Ah battery, so could well be what he has.
If fitted under the seat, then it needs a "low-fit" battery. There are a few options around the 100Ah size if he wants bigger. And if he gets an AGM or GEL battery he could lay on its side as well to get a wider range of options.
Chances are he has a basic relay controlled by the D+ signal so he will never really be fully charging the battery for optimum life. But how old is the current battery? If he has got 5+ years from it, that would be decent enough.

I stand corrected! :)

I meant that I had assumed it was a starter battery.

I remember reading about CCA ratings when I was first fitting out my van and something about starting in cold temperatures so that is where the assumption started.

Incidentally, my daughters T5 had a tiny grey leisure battery when she bought it. It had no real ID on it so may well be something similar. She replaced it with a standard 110A battery thinking it would not be up to the job but who knows!

Thanks for the reply Dave sounds like he may struggle to get a different type if height is gonna be an issue, I'll let him know. Just remembered its a T5.

His leisure battery has swelled out but he doesn't know why.
I would want to determine the cause before simply replacing the battery. I would guess that battery swelling is caused by overheating/overcharging? It happened to me with a motorbike battery when the voltage regulator was shot and putting in over 20v causing the battery to boil dry and severely distort the casing. I would check the alternator output voltage.
