the scottish government has chucked buckets of cash into subsidising the fares to the western isles !!! apparently the new fare will be priced at the equivalent road miles to the island concerned. for cars it is set at 60 pence per mile plus a core charge of either £5 or £10. which roughly equates to a single fare £35 single and £7 per passenger on the route between UIG and TARBERT. this scheme commences on the 19th.october when the winter timetables are published. if you go to the calmac website and ask about the scheme on their customer care page you will get all the information that you need. this is where i got the info. from. this opens up a whole new ballgame to camperers !!!

hebrides fares

considering the amount of interest that has been shown on various hebridean postings, i am surprised that so few members have visited my post. i mentioned earlier that i would be notifying members of any developments in the new lower fare system, but the response has been zilch !!!! why bother.

Don't bother Steve,
Sure it was a very valuable post you made. Many did read it, but did not answer it (I didn't too). And we don't have a 'thank-you' button anymore.
So, on behalve of those who didn't thank you: THANK YOU. :)
And please, keep posting even when there seems no much response coming back, we all owe you. :)
With gratitude,
Leo

As has been said - we don't have the Thank You button anymore but this post has had some 180 plus hits which must show there's a fair bit of interest. I'd say "keep posting because there's a lot of interest"

It's also a Bank Holiday weekend and most active members will be away camping without internet access so don't get too dispondent Steveyboy, your posts are much appreciated;), thanks for sharing:cool:

ferry price

good news paid 24 pounds return to bute from colintraive a distance i could cast a bait.mind you mid august 8am ferry just us and a van on ferry says it all

inter island rip off.

sorry peppers ....the lower fares only apply the longer routes, not the inter island ferries. contact calmac for their winter fares and timetables for further information !

ANY reduction on Calmac fares has got to be good news Steve. I realise the inter island fares are not subject to RET but still mainland to South Uist up to North Uist via Benbecula then over to Harris and then back to the mainland is looking real good from now on.

Having paid £361 for a hopscotch this last month........ please excuse me while I go and cry into my single malt......... and a big thankyou to Steve4kay for your info..... p.s. do you realise you have my vans name as your signature?;)

carpe diem !!!!

the above latin inscription is boldly emblazoned at the top right hand rear of my auto trail scout in a nice shade of red !!! so SNAP!!!! by the way calmac have still not made their winter fares available as yet !!!

Mine's on the bonnet in blue in the latin, " sieze the day " which is my, and apparently your objective when out in the van.:):);)

Sorry, but a bit exaggerated by the press. To quote Calmac
http://www.calmac.co.uk/road-equivalent-tariff.html

All three of the mainland to Outer Hebrides routes will feature in the pilot exercise, which has been developed by consultants on behalf of the Scottish Government: from Stornoway to Ullapool (52 miles), from Uig to Tarbert (29miles) and Uig to Lochmaddy (29 miles), from Oban to Castlebay and Lochboisdale (89 miles) and the service from Oban to Coll and Tiree (59.7 miles).

The two inter-island services operated by CalMac across the Sounds of Harris and Barra in the Outer Hebrides will not feature in the pilot. The fares for the inter-island legs (between Castlebay and Lochboisdale and Tarbert to Lochmaddy) will not be at RET rates but will be set at the same level as the fares on the Sounds of Barra and Harris. The length of each route to be used in the calculation of the RET fare has been determined by the consultants. CalMac will calculate the new fares on the basis of the information and data supplied by the consultant.

Why have other island areas not been included in the pilot scheme?

There are two reasons. Firstly, the SNP manifesto commitment was to introduce a pilot scheme for routes to and from the Outer Hebrides. Second is the matter of affordability. The finance available (£22.5million in 2008-9, 9-10, 10-11) has been approved in the recent Scottish Government Spending Review and Budget
