Fallas Spain 2009 :: fallas009.jpg picture by malarth - Photobucket
The first 2 pictures show Gandia Beach where we wild Camped for a Month to see the Fallas. Fallas is an Annual Spanish Fiesta in the Valencia Provence, the figures and scenes are built in great secrecy over a year and t en displayed in the streets for about 10 days, where they are judged and a winner found , huge competition and prizes to be won, Daily there are parades and fireworks music and dancing etc. The figures are huge, sometimes up to 60 feet tall, built of papie mache and paper etc. all this culminates in the ceremony of setting fire to the scenes, scarey as they are built in the main streets of the towns, and stuffed with fireworks and explosives, a few get injured but not too many, a truly spectacular spectacle to see.

Do you have the coordinates for the spot - I looked on Google Earth and the coast looks quite built up. We plan to be in Spain in March 2011 and have added the Fallas to the list of 'must see' - thanks David

fallas in valencia

If you should decide to go to see the extraordinary event in Valencia, they have areas in the middle of town where camper vans are allowed to park for the festival. Or did when we went there.
Do be careful, though.
During the fireworks, which are far more violently explosive than any I have ever seen and heard in the UK, teams of druggies break in to the motor-homes to steal whatever they can.
The noise of any alarms just is not heard, and the police, called to our van after a destructive attempt had damaged the door and left blood on the step, more or less shrugged their shoulders and said the equivalent of "hard luck, mate. What do you expect leaving a nice tempting motor-home un-attended during the festival?"
Fortunately for us, a determined young German motor-homing lass parked on the other side of the small gardens we were alongside, saw the thief trying to break open our door and chased him off. Brave girl.
Also be aware that you won't get much sleep. The tah-rar-a tarara-bang little bands wander around well into the night, and at around three a.m. some-one will let off what sounds like a stick of dynamite just to remind you it is Fallas.....then they start the fireworks again at around 5 in the morning.
I hated it and enjoyed it in about equal measure, and our young dog, who absolutely loved fireworks, popping champagne corks, etc., stated off hugely enjoying the bangs but was, like us, made almost zomboid after twenty-four hours.
If we ever went again, I would stick to one of the smaller towns. Valencia was overwhelming. Peter.

vindiboy - thank you for a helpful reply, much appreciated - David
There is a campsite here too if you want one, it is between the City of Gandia and the seaside resort of Gandia Grua, nice site, we had a look at it whilst there but we prefer wilding, we had or saw no trouble with break ins to vans whilst we were there despite what a previous poster said, that was not our experience.
