is there such a thing - ie one you could trigger from inside the van if feeling threatened. I decided against an alarm as i thought it wd annoy me so much if it started misbehaving especially in strong winds.
also - what are the flashing LED that look like an alarm?
where to buy, personal delivery to me...etc etc all welcome
Thanks

I don't know if such a thing exists but I do know that every time an alarm goes off people studiously ignore it, so alarms are generally a complete waste of time. The only reason we have one fitted is because it lowers the insurance premium!

You can get a fake alarm flashing LED from Maplins, you could mount this either on your dashboard (problem with that is it wouldn't be seen if you have blinds on all windows) ideally you can drill a hole & mount it on the outside. All you need to do is put a switch in the wire so you can turn it on.

I see that you have a Fiat Doblo, does it not have a factory fitted alarm?

thanks!

well - i will follow up the tip about fake alarm. and re fiat doblo - well - was quite a saga - i originally said i wanted an alarm - lowered ins premium for 1 thing , but they cdn't actually fit it - something about fiat electrics .. i dunno .. but was relieved.

My advice if you are wilding is to keep the van locked and in a position where you can make a sharp exit. That means no ramps, no swivelled seats, no silver screens or external equipment, and position so you can drive straight out. And sleep in socks/tracksuit with the key handy so you can get straight in the cab and drive off

To be honest, people ignore alarms in urban areas so who is going to take notice miles from anywhere, least of all some shady person.

In saftey respects quiet urban streets in nicer leafy suburbs are better to park up than places miles from anywhere.

If you do feel a bit wary over parking at night get a Air hooter such as boat users use keep it handy to sound it, to attract attention,--- dont leave keys in ignition or in view of windows---- always park where you can drive straight off without having to shunt about

Yes there is something you can do. I'm not sure why you want a fake alarm. It could deter an attack I suppose. I have a genuine panic button and it might be true that nobody reacts to an alarm any more but there is one person who does. Your burglar. The only time our van has ever been broken into was in Lloret about 12 years ago. I had the ordinary car horn wired up to a panic button in the back. When he tried to break in at three in the morning I screamed obscenities at him, switched the horn on and off and – he ran away.

So, for the van we have now I mounted an ordinary horn on the roof wired from the leisure battery through a switch over the bed. Cable lengths are short so I didn't use a relay but see below. Never had to use it and this thread has reminded me that it is time I tested it again.

As a slight modification I have thought of switching the horn through a relay and additional to the panic button connecting it through the courtesy light switches. I haven't done it because I have good security on all doors and any attempt to open them would certainly wake me but it would be a simple thing to do.

In fact, on reflection, I would always have my panic alarm. But I now like the idea of a visual little red light too. Hadn't thought of it before.

I fitted the fake alarms in my daughters and my cars. It didn't do us any good as the scrotes still broke in.
Save your money and get one of THESE
This is what I use CLICKY If you're in Oz and you go to an out station if there's one of these running loose in the Paddock, you stay in the car if you've got any sense - also they don't take up as much room as a Rottie :)

hi lizzythefish halfords sell the flashing led's

We have an alarm system with panic attic button, but also have my trusty Army wooden baton by the bed. Although this could cause me more problems legally, I intend to protect my family first!
As for a dog? Not a chance! I like dogs but they are too smelly, shed too many dog hairs, restricts locations and too much looking after. That is just when we are in the 'van.
At home the dog would have to be left on it's own for long periods due to our work, and that is not fair on any dog.

Not too keen on the baton! But I agree about the dogs. We have met few people who have had their vans broken into but one of them left it in a supermarket car park, with two quite lively dogs in it. The thieves drugged the dogs (probably with doctored meat) and got in through a window (thus not setting off the alarm) and took virtually everything. If someone wants to break in they will, whatever you do. But on the other hand, such events are rare and you can be robbed in your own home - so don't let it prevent you doing what you want to do - just take sensible - but not over-the-top precautions.
