Exmouth parking

I'm all for councils providing more overnight parking but can't help thinking that it's more that they have discovered another cash cow. £15 to £20 for parking and a tap seems over the top. Three nights in a C&CC site in May for £15 a night with toilets, black waste and water and a basic C/L costing between £5 and £10 seems to put Exmouth on the expensive side, but not as exorbitant as Pendine Sands.
I suspect that these councils have been encouraged by all these people inundating them with letters and emails suggesting that they open up parking for a reasonable charge has given them the incentive to go for the top end of the price range.

The people inundating them are all telling them that this is extortionate. Councillors see how much campsites are charging and think they can charge the same. Its up to all of us to disabuse them. Unfortunately rented Motorhomers and all the new entrants to motorhoming don't know any better and may well pay the prices suggested.

Sorry I didn't express myself properly. I was talking of all the people who were encouraging Councils and organisations to open up more aires with standard letters produced by various organisations created to promote them. Many of these people are just the sort of people you describe, many of them more accustomed to the £1000+ costs of hiring a cottage for the week.

I understood completely what you were saying. You are probably meaning CAMpRA. It campaigns to open up parking for overnight parking at whatever the going rate is for parking there. Sometimes that will be free as at Helmsley. Sometimes is paid for as at the Roddee Chester or Skipton.

I have used Skipton, Roddee, Helmsley, Appledore, Lytham St Annes and Hawick all of which were in operation some years ago at reasonable cost. I didn't mention the organisation you mention, but they may well be one of those concerned.

CAMpRA use these places to show councils what can be done. Some councils just see everything through the lens of "How do we make more money from this", thus scaring away the visitors who would spend money in their shops if they made it easy for us to park.

My point well expressed. Thank you.

I think it’s great that more councils seem interested in providing places to park overnight but share the fear that like Portugal it could lead to the loss of the freedom to park elsewhere.
More influential I think is how people do stay when not in a recognised parking area or on a site. It only needs a few to stay longer than a day or two, gather in groups, set up things outside, run generators or light fires to cause annoyance and lead to the loss of a location. The vast majority do not do these things and in fact possibly reduce vandalism etc. merely by their presence and many reduce litter by clearing up what other people have left. An advantage of greatly increased numbers of motorhomes is that it is becoming less easy to merely ban them when it’s no longer such a minority using them, meaning that provision has to be made.

Unfortunately provision is being made at quite considerable cost, way above reasonable value for money. The other danger is the loss of overnighting spots in quiet out of the way car parks that have been used for years without hindrance, but suddenly seen as a cash cow to whoever owns it be it the National Trust, Forestry Commission, or a Wildlife Trust.
