Hi All,
Need advice from anyone who has had experience of BREAKDOWN/RECOVERY policies in Europe. Who do you recomend?
Many thanks:cheers:

Breakdown and recovery across Europe for 12 months a year is included as standard in my Safeguard policy (which currently costs £305 pa).

Breakdown cover

Hi all. I'm with Saga. £300.98 full comp including 12 months full european breakdown cover which I thought was real good value for money!

Cannot remember how much we paid but we can recommend Europ Assistance as it was worth every penny. We broke down on the way back from the Vendee. They transported the motorhome to the Fiat dealer in Nantes who couldn't fix the problem. We overnighted on their forecourt and the next day they arranged the following for us at no cost to us:-

Hire car to get us from Nantes to Cherborg to catch our booked ferry.
A taxi from Poole to Salisbury (the nearest they could get a hotel for us as it was Bank Holiday)
2 rooms with breakfast in a 4* hotel in Salisbury
Taxi to Salisbury Station
Train from Salisbury to Bristol
Train from Bristol to Derby
Taxi from Derby to home

We had to pay the train fares but was reimbursed within about 7 days.

They then transported the motorhome from Nantes to Home where we got our local dealer to come out and fix it. The funny thing was there were all these french mechanics scratching their heads and the problem turned out to be a blocked fuel filter.

It took us 3 days to get home but EA made it bearable with their help.

The problem with insurance is you do not know how good it is until you need to use it.

That is really good. Best of luck. I thought mine was cheap.

I'm trying to find a reasonable price for renewing my insurance, I have breakdown with ADAC which currently is due for renewal in Feb. so I could cancel if I could get breakdown with the insurance for a reasonable price. Quotes I've had from Safeguard & Comfort are over £400 inc. breakdown. Best up to now is Saga, this was getting 15% discount for doing it online, when I went on their site to check it was down so I called them & managed a further discount of 10% by getting them to quote me for home insurance cost was £257 without breakdown. For home insurance after going through all the details they couldn't even get me a quote.

I don't know if the prices people are saying they got were recent but except for Saga nobody is below £350.

Were you asked for proof that your van has been regulary serviced? I had europ assit through shield and didn't read the small print where it mentions that you need proof of regular servicing and that your vehicle has not been worked on wuithin 10days of your departure date. I broke down last year and whilst i can not fault the helpfulness and customer service of the chap/linguist/engineer i was in contact with on the phone i did almost end up in a sticky situation.
Basically i hadn't read the small print and as such could not be repatriated, also to make matters worse the mercedes garage i had been towed to (on the insurance policy) refused to work on my van as i have modified it to run on veggie oil.
Fortunately i discovered and fixed the problem myself after a night of worry but you must read the small print of your cover especially if you have an older vehicle.

ah interesting. i run mine on veggie oil (SVO) at the mo cos i got some that worked out at 90p a litre

the thing is, if someone has a bad filter, or something simple, like i had a leaking diesel pump, they wouldnt trailer you back a 1000 miles all over europe etc. when this happened to me, it was a simple problem to fix, but my health meant i couldnt do it (infact i got breakdown cover as i cant change a tyre myself). i had to borrow 300eu to get it fixed. trouble was, that was the weekend i found out my dad had dropped dead back here, and i was in dresden with my dog, otherwise i would have got intouch with a german car club im in, paid a couple of them in beer and vodka and been sorted (like happened in berlin a few years ago).

im lucky, i can speak a bit of a few languages (cos of the girls i date or copluate with) but hell i cant read or write it half the time lol

oh and having read up on using veg oil recently, it seems it cleans out all the crap from the tank and fuel lines, so filters soon get blocked, so the tip everyone gave me was carry spares!!!!! this now seems a good time generally.

just like i carry spare spark plugs, leads etc, i carry spare filters incase i get a blockage caused by running on veg oil

Yes, my policy with Safeguard was renewed at £305 this year (early summer) and the premium is actually lower than it was on a cheaper van 10 years ago! It might be that I am geting some kind of loyalty bonus for being with them so long and, of course, the rate is also affected by the value of your motorhome (current value of mine is around £25k), your no-claims bonus, the area where you live and where it is parked when not in use....... and so on. However, talking to others, it seems that my figure is about the norm.
