European Equipment?

Have booked a ferry for a trip to Germany, but I believe I need extra equipment for the journey. I also will be taking 3 push bikes on the rack at the back of my motorhome. What do I really need?
I have seen some 'vans' with a square plate with diagonal lines attached to the bikes, will I need one of them ?

These plates are only compulsory in Italy, and free in the rest of the world
