England experience

Hi

I am back from my holidays, mainly spent in Shaldon/Devon.
This was my wife's choice (trip to memory lane) and I can only feel sorry for my English fellow wildcampers for not being able to taste the level of freedom we enjoy in France. I tried the suggested site near Shaldon; nice location but during the night some lagerloads kept us awake, revving their engine, using their horne, misbehaving. I must say thank you to a council worker who came back later to empty the bin as he thought he would wake us up.
In Shaldon my wife mentioned we were wildcamping and she got a lot of abuse. What a mentality!
In the end we thought it better to stay at a nearby campsite at an expensive £21 per night.
We tried the Portishead marina location for a night , again a bit noisy in the morning when builders arrive.
During our trip we met a friendly milkman from the Forest of Dean with his motorhome, an Englishman in his converted LDV van on his way to Perpignan , a German couple in a fantastic homebuilt motorhome who have been everywhere in the world with it (but is now avoiding England) and of course the snotty couple with mine is bigger than yours attitude. A big thank you for the friendly father and son Morris from Morval/ Wordcestershire who in no time sorted out the electrics from my motorhome
So, when visiting England in future I will restrict myself to campsites .
It is a shame as I love England.

Now I need to find an online dealer to supply exhaust systems for my Ford Transit based motorhome. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Kris

Im sorry to hear that your experience in England was not pleasant...come to the highlands of Scotland...I cannot promise that there wil be no lagerlouts as I come across them myself but in remote areas you have less chance...oh and also wonderful scenery to look at!!!!

I was going to say exactly the same thing:D The further north you go the less likely you are to experience problems:)

sorry you had a bad experience kris,i live in the torbay area and was thinking of giving the shaldpn area a go for a night but wont bother now. What a shame.I have to agree with what has been said here in that the further north you go particularly scotland the better things get.If you ever stay here again, give the quantock hills a go.We spent a week there in march and had a cracking time and no dickheads to ruin the day.We try to get away most weekends if possible and have experianced 2 occasions which made my blood boil like yourselves. We have decided that we will try as much as possible to stay away from towns and cities and spend our time in the moorlands or countryside, hopefully we will and have found peace and quiet and enjoyment.
This country is not set up like forward thinking France,we are aiming to spend much of our time over there in the future and are planning a brief tour next year.Apologies to you for the filth we seam to be breeding over here.

I can second that - and you're guaranteed a virtually silent night at Magbrin's 'stopover'!

Hi Kris.
Sorry to hear of your unpleasant experiences of wild camping in England. We are off in June to visit the Brecon Beacons in South Wales. Hopefully we'll fair a little better, fingers crossed anyway.
We had only 2 unfortunate experiences last year when we toured the Peak District and then our home county of Norfolk. Firstly when a group of louts shouted abuse at us from a van at a set of traffic lights they obviously thought we were French. On another occasion some hoodies decided to amuse themselves by circling us on bikes shouting things like F-----g Frogs. Sad is'nt it,:( especially when you have to try and explain their behaviour to your half French granddaughter.
I'm just glad that it was me, and not other French people having to put up with with this embarrassing behaviour. It was after that I decided to buy GB and Union Jack stickers, which had nothing to do with pride.
But we are looking forward to our trip this year, haven't been to Wales since army training over 40 years ago. Anyone any pointers on places to stay clear of in case of trouble would be well appreciated.:) We hope to be wild camping.
Regards Nolly.

hi nolly you should be ok down in the brecons ,we stay up that area quite often. the only probs you should encounter is the tendencey for horn piping ,for some reason known only to the welsh a motor home parked up warants some enthusiastic horn blowing, not only on a night  to be honest its only a few demented individuals that seem to indulge it seems to happen all over not only the brecons but other than that never had anyother probs

Yes... avoid Nash Point near Llantwit Major. I've wild-camped there for years with no problems but following an incident involving getting blocked in by a group of threatening thugs, it's now apparently trouble-spot. Such a shame - it used to be so quiet with spendid views and a near-empty beach at the foot of the cliffs. (It's still fine for a daytime visit though!)

I'm guessing you might be heading towards Sennybridge? This hasn't changed much over the years and remains one of my favourite wilding spots.

Enjoy your trip.

Thanks for the info everyone, all is taken on board.:)
We're booked onto the ferry at Calais the evening of the 22nd June. We hope to park up for the night at St Margarets cliff, and then set off on the 23rd. We will be looking for a stopover on route possibly around Swindon but have yet to consult the map.
Thanks for the offer on some good sight seeing and safe spots Mandrake, If the dates fit perhaps we could meet and open a bottle of wine.;) Will have a look at the map tonight, at the areas you've suggested, as we have a good couple of weeks to spend in Wales before moving on to Norfolk for a wedding, (no getting out of that one).:D
We only used campsites last year for the facility of dumping grey and black water, other than that it's the freedom of wildcamping for us, even in France we normally only use the aires for vidange.
Thanks again. I'm hoping we can reinstate Kris's confidence in wildcamping UK style for next year.
Regards Nolly.

Thanks to everybody. Next time the UK visit will be direction North.
I won't give up wildcamping, but I will have to bring my boxing gloves!
A couple of years ago in Newport (north) I was watching a bike race. Suddenly a couple of half drunken young men started throwing bottles on the road and to the racers. I was furious and against my wife's advice in I told them what I thought about their behaviour. Needless to say I came seconds from a fight and/or ending up in hospital . The Police warned by the public arrested the 3 yobs.
Of course I agree you have to stay away from the large French towns.
I live in the Creuse and I never lock my housedoor and cardoors (even when leaving on holiday).
