engine overheating peugeot 1971 cc year 1989

Getting a bit desperate here. My Citroen C25 is currently laid up. It has the 1971 cc peugeot petrol engine, year 1989.
The studs snapped on the exhaust manifold, so had to take the head off to remove the studs. Got the head skimmed as it was slightly warped and got hold of a second hand manifold as the original was warped. Got it all back together and the dear little engine now overheats. It never did before. It's fine when just idling , but creeps up into the red when going at speed. Any ideas anyone please? Something has obviously happened by doing the repair. The thermostat is ok and the water pump is good. The fan kicks in. There is new oil and coolant in .

engine overheating

Colin 123, If you have a sealed cooling syetem it sounds to me as if you have an air-lock...older car & vans with an overflow bottle need to be bled at the thermostat housing..sometimes there,s a bleed nipple.
Cheers Eddie.

Thanks Eddie,

I will be looking at the weekend, I'll let you know how I get on. Suggestions elsewhere seem to suggest that It needs to be bled for around 30 seconds after water starts to appear.

Manifold

Check the engine mountings,if well worn these are often a cause of manifold/exhaust breakages, you don't want that again.
Overheating, air lock- Try idling without the header tank pressure cap, massage the rad hoses.MIND FINGERS INCASE FAN KICKS IN !!!!.Leave to cool and stand a while without the cap.If the header tank can be raised that may help.
You could drain and refill more slowly.
Best of luck.

overheating

Give dereck at Delfhin designs a ring, what he does not about these motors you can write on a postage stamp 01258 857474, sounds like a air lock.

overheating engine

sorry to hear of your problem re; overheating. I had a similar problem some years ago and I was told to take the rad off and thoroughly flush it out , you will be surprised how much gunge comes out , just a thought.:juggle: If i the rad has been drained off for a while the gunge inside hardens .

Thanks for all the replies and apologies for the delay replying.

Eventually did a complete strip down of the engine to find cracks in liners and damaged pistons.

Some new ones sorted the problem.

many years now since i worked on this type of van, also had a talbot express auto sleeper years back . is the heater getting hot if not then you have an air lock and you cannot easily remove the header tank to bleed the system .but if my memory serves me ,there is a bleed pipe with a small brass srew in someware near the bulkhead it may be a short thin pipe with the screw in the end or even in one of the hoses .if so bleed the system through this . if that has no effect i used to remove the header tank hold it high and loosen the higest hose . they can be a bit of a sod to bleed .
