Electrolux fridge winter covers

Hi we have a dometic Fridge - freezer and struggled to find the right vents, found this site usefull

Can somebody please explain what the winter cover does.

Because its cold today SWMBO turned the fridge down. I dont even attempt to understand this logic, so perhaps I can add it as a supplementary to the above

There are air vents on the outside of the van behind the fridge. In summer the fridge needs as much help as possible to cool things down. You can also fit a fan to further assist the cooling in extreme conditions.

In winter the fridge is not working so hard and these vents can be covered. They also stop a strong draft blowing in behind my sink unit when they are on and facing into the wind. The covers are rectangular and clip under the top of the vent and snap into place on the botom of the vent. The vent covers should be removed if the fridge is being run on gas at any time but can be left on in winter when running on electricity.

You can also get covers to prevent the rain blowing into the heater exhausts and water heater exhaust on the side of the van. I suffered in Autumn last year with water getting into a heater that way. It cost over £1000 for a replacement heater. Now I cover mine when not in use even in summer.

I did suffer from extensive draughts when the wind was in a certain direction. Had fridge out to replace faulty pcb and sealed round sink with duct tape. Also put a silcon seal round interior face. Still get a draught, although not a gale now, from the door catch

I also think that they are good for preventing road spray getting in when you are driving in bad weather. When we bought the van we needed to service the fridge I removed the vents after traveling a few miles and the back of the fridge was quite damp with road spray :( I've seen a few vans since with much bigger vents on the very back of van and can't help wondering how wet these get when driving in the rain. Since this I have always fitted winter covers when driving even in summer :)

Part of my Saturday routine now is that we go to Tesco's in the van if we have not been out and then whilst we are unloading the shopping and putting it all away we run all the appliances. Fridge on Gas, Gas heating and Gas hotwater. It get everything nice and hot and ensures any damp is kept away from these parts which will suffer if left damp all winter.
