Current draw
Graham, remember Volts x Amps = Watts... therefore if you have an item that quotes its wattage such as a TV or a bulb, then Watts / Volts = Amps!
Your battery will have an amp/hr rating on it so you can start to get an idea of how long the battery will last with your current/amp draw on it.
I have also found that leisure batteries DO work, i.e. they REALLY do cope better at suppling a small draw for a long time, rather than an engine/starter battery that's designed to give a lot of power for a short time... but DON'T try and use a leisure battery for jump starting a flat engine battery as the huge current draw will buckle the plates and ruin it VERY quickly!
