AUTO TRAIL TRACKER 2005,rear door step will not come down.checked all fuses, and oiled &greased all hinges and what should be moving parts but no joy, anybody got any ideas please.

Hi, I had a similar problem years ago. Turned out that it was not fitted straight and for some reason kept blowing the switch. The other option assuming earth ok is the relay.

As telstar says check the relay,

If you have checked the fuses its best to use a multimeter and make sure that you are getting power where its needed. You might have a bad earth or a broken wire somewhere.

Multimeters are cheep and can save you hours of grief, about £10 on ebay you don't need to be a genius to use em, I'm proof of that :)

The first day I got my Hymer I bumped the step by forgetting to retract it and moving off. The Nissal bumper wasn't to good after I caught it. We managed to get it back in but it needed attention at a dealer to straighten it up again. It looked OK but wouldn't work.

When I had it repaired it was always a problem. I later needed a new step so I fitted a double step which I got from O'Leary's (ex Brownhills stock) at a really good price. The step is made by Omnistor.

Once again the gremlins are happyily working away in our beloved vans. Here is a link to the wiring diagrame of your Auto Trail. As you can see there are four wires going to the step.
Two control the step and two are related to the automatic retraction of the step when the engine is started.
My suggestion is that you first establish that all the connectors in the circuit are clean and corrosion free and that a voltage exists at the rocker switch. Make a careful written diagram of the position and colour of all wires before doing the following.
Carefully remove each wire one at a time, clean and put a light smear of vasaline on them and replace. Whilst doing so check using your multi-meter that the switch is working correctly and that a voltage exists and that an earth is present and working . Switches also suffer from tarnishing/overheating and can fail. Don;t forget the contacts on the step itself as they are potentialy exposed to all the Salt and sh** from the road.
If you do the above un-hurryedly and logicaly you will cure the problem.
Best of luck,
Regards,
Wanderer

Hi rayray 3377.....on our Dakota 05 Merc i had the same problem, solved by cleaning a faulty connector....runs just below the wipers under bonnet.
Should be a see through connector about half way along.
Hope this helps !!
