If you read my last thread on this subject you will be aware that my fridge has failed on 12v. Refresher from episode 1 - fridge switching off when engine started
Van taken to local Motorhome workshop for repair
Returned with absolutely no habitation electrics
Complained, habitation electrics restored but original fault still there
Told by workshop that EBL has failed charge £120
Sent block away for repair and have been informed there is no fault with the block

A and N Caravan has suggested that there is a 20a fuse near to engine batter that has blown. Does anyone out there know where I will find this on a 2001 Hymer 564. He says that he thinks the D+ Did all is compromised either by this fuse or loose or corroded terminals. I am now £250 down and no fix yet

On our 2006 Hymer, additional fuses are right next to the battery. This includes a fuse for the fridge. Interestingly, our fridge was erratic on 12V when we got the van. It turned out that the extra battery take off installed by Hymer was not tightened to the main 12V battery clamp and was arcing. Certainly worth checking.

Thinking forwards, I’m off to France in 3 weeks and really really need this sorting before hand. If I can not find the problem myself with the wiring, does any one know of a reliable electrics expert in the North Herts area. I am fed up of going to places that know no more than I do. I have seen some of their repairs and mine have been better. It really is a joke and a lottery to what service you get. I never mind paying BUT I do expect to get value for my £££ and the correct advice

Do you have or can you get hold of a manual for your model? It should give an idea where the fuse in question is located. On my Geist I have a fuse very close to the starter battery. I think it’s in starter battery area you need to check as if it’s like mine the fridge works from engine side when engine is running. It looks like it is passed through the EBL though so would look like it takes from leisure battery when it doesn’t.

I may be wrong though so wait for some more comments but as I say I have a fuse right near starter battery in engine compartment for mine.

There are some fuses just above the engine battery on mine, they are not part of the standard Fiat fuses so I will check to see if that is where it is

Do you have a multimeter and know how to use it? The 12v wiring to fridge is relatively simple. If the relay in the EBL is fine then the fault must be in the wiring (or fuse). There is the D+ sensing wire to confirm that the alternator is running (which triggers the EBL fridge relay) and then the 12V in and out for fridge (switched via EBL relay) which should feed direct from battery (via the 20a fuse).

If not, any competent vehicle autoelectrician should be able to check the feeds to the EBL for you if you tell them the above. AS you have already found out, many motorhome electricians seem to view the EBL as a magic box.....

The main problem being finding this competent person. They give it all their verbal until they have your cash

These are the fuses on my 2002 Hymer, as I said just above the battery, the small grey one is 2A and the green fuse next to it is 30A, I suggest you look at each fuse and test them, the covers on the larger fuses clip off to access the fuse

I am glad I looked at mine, a little bit of corrosion needs cleaning up

Thanks Tezza, I think that is the problem. Found that bank of fuses and the yellow one was extremely past it’s use by date, in fact it fell to pieces. How did you manage to clean up the holder, I could only just pull out the pieces of the old fuse never mind look it the terminals there. I can now say the original workshop I took the van to obviously did not even look at those fuses

Forgot to say, can’t check for sure it’s all working until the Elektroblock returns in the post

I haven't cleaned mine up on there yet, still not able to do much since my op but normally I clean the contacts with either fine wire wool/fine wet & dry or sandpaper, I spray the contacts with an electrical cleaner, I carry this in my van at all times ae235.jpg

If the fuse holder is beyond cleaning I solder a new one in

Thanks tezza for all your help. I would also like to say to any one else needing their Elektroblock looking at that A and N Caravans in north Wales gave excellent swift service and lots of email support speedily replied to. The Elektroblock was away for 5 days from when I posted it and that included a week end too.

Yes I have had some very useful emails from them myself and I wasn’t having any work done just asking advice
