hi, as good as your intentions are i dont see the govt ever allowing it, they dont get the concept of it, theres not enough of them do it, the few mp,s who do caravaning use sites. but the biggest thorn in the side is gypsys or travellers, any body who doesnt and never will grasp the concept of aires, like europe do, will see us as one step away from gypsys, last year my hymer dropped the dreaded 5th gear, near Lyon, i was forced to hole up over a long weekend break at a municipal camp site as the fiat dealer wouldnt let me park in his massive back yard. the lady who run the site was nice helpfull spoke good english etc but couldnt explain to me why half the site was full of eastern block gypsys camped out with little make shift gardens round their vans, plastic grass, gnomes, and a picket fence, kids and dogs running wild as they do, the french dont see gypsys as we do, they pay up front the same as any body else on sites. but they do keep english ,dutch and germans away from them. i did try to explain english arent as rude as the dutch and germans, it got lost in the translation!. I later went to north africa via Gibraltar on the way back to uk via madrid theres a massive roundabout on the ring road , got to be half a mile round it. theres a full encampment of romanian gypsys with wavy tin shacks fences horses tied up goats etc and they have been there for 2 years, they dont have hymers or motorhomes etc usuall trucks and massive caravans etc but again a different attitude to gypsys they seem tolerated if kept away from the rest of human life. they even have a few set up on the edges of industrial area,s and road side verges like we do here, they dont seem to suffer with theft and mess left behind from them as we do here in uk. I parked one night in the overspill car park at the rear of asda in park royal , london, done it many times before. woke up to find us surrounded by caravans parked all over the car park to make it awkward to get in /out/police etc. never heard them arrive, but they or ther kids i suppose had managed to dump rubbish and 3 neat piles of exrement with toilet paper near our van, they dont have toilets i guess! we got out asp, so that will be gated off in future. So in conclusion, untill they ever sort out the gypsy problem we will never get aires in any great number, i think. last yearI read in MMM magazine a scottish chap who was left a piece of land in a will wanted to turn it into an aire after much expense in tarmac kerbs , water and waste etc council said it constitutes a caravan site and wouldnt get a licence, he made it into a private car park pay and display, to meet their regs etc, then they put up signs no cooking or overnight parking , so day trippers cant barbque either! an aire doesnt fit in with their regulations as they dont know how to categorise it so in order to not upset the nimby,s they use the race/gypsy card to make it go away. I am a hgv driver , you try stopping in a layby from scarbrough to york on the A64 every layby has no overnight parking in, trucks are exemoted because they have drivers hours restrictions, you would think? but I have been moved on at 2 am by police they sign your tacograph on the back stating roadside parking infringment. so even the truckers get it in the neck! of course its the camp sit owners pressuring the council about lost revenue by allowing parking in laybys, and then they lose on council tax revenue, is it just all about the money.? Do we just sell up and go to french france? good luck you will need it.
