Checking my driving licence. It states when I reach 70 I need to send my photocard licence and COUNTER PART. Here lies my problem. I have looked high and low but can't seem to find a counter part. What does it lok like? What is written on this counter part. Have I a problem without sending a counter part? HELP !!! You advice would be much appreciated. Thanks. David

Have you looked on the DVLA internet site ? I wouldn't worry,i'd just say i lost the whole thing anyhow, and that i'm 70 (if i was) and what happens next ?

While your at it,ask them if your out of the country for more than 6 months with your vehicle ... a motorhome why you have to EXPORT it ! ? sounds crazy to me,but thats what they implie..........Can you all ASK and say WHY ?
Your retired, you want to tour, for X ammount of time, maybe 2 years, how can you export it in every country you visit or why do you have to drive all the way back to the UK !!? to get fresh documents every year or less..........crazy.

hi. you just tell them you have lost it. actually your photo licence is of no value with out the counterpart .just as well you havent been asked for it. also be careful you may loose some entitlements at 70 check well in advance. and check even more when you get the new licence back. have fun . dvla are usially very helpfull but if you ring be patient it does take awhile sometimes. cheers alan.

hi barney . you have to return for mot etc and road fund licence. there is an eu agrement that all visiting vehicles will be legal in their country of registration. so if you dont come back your vehicle can be uplifted and scrapped. as we register our vehicles with dvla that gives them the right to snatch vehicles not taxed off the streets . it goes back to our use of maritime law. another story. but thats why we appear in the dock. etc .the rules are quite plain to understand . we may not agree with them but they have been around way before you took your vehicle out of the country . i do spend alot of time fighting the authorities on these issues but i feel you made a choice against the rules of the day. its very hard to change the law. in fact its best to abide by thm or you will get punished. i know it causes alot of stress for people like yourself. in spain they do uplift and crush british reg vehicles regularly. all eu can now check on your vehicle status. as can any individual. best bewarned it can and does happen. cheers alan.

Hi Alan, what does the counterpart look like and what is written on it??? If I knew what it looked like I could turn my whole house over for it :) I have just checked DVLA and it says it is free for a 70's over licence. To phone them is £1.50 a minute. Thanks Buddy.

OT
". it goes back to our use of maritime law. another story. but thats why we appear in the dock. etc ."

do a quick google for this - that relates to the States - not the UK. Nice idea though.

Also partially OT - if the vehicle is legal in the UK - eg filled with biodiesel or veg oil in the tank - can the Frenchies do anything about it? I know I can't FILL with veg oil in France - and they have told me this - but what about entering France with veg in the tank? My Fiat engine aparently will run fine on veg - and I collect it here and run my car (legally) on it.

the veg oil is a good question .i cant answer that one. there is a ruling about only carrying fuel in tanks that are not across the chassis as in belly tanks on trucks and you are not suposed to transfer cheaper fuel from one vehicle to another. it could be said if you enter from uk veg oil is allowed so france should let you carry on using what in your tanks. it may be illegal to fill your tanks with it while in france though.
there is a conection with maritme law that why you stand in a dock when in court. and there is other instances . we can insist on the type of court we are taken to. but anyway the op . must export his vehicle if out of the country . although it may not be possible for him to re reg in other countries . you have to be resident in a country to register. there as been bilateral agreements set up for quite a while. as we know we used to ask for a refund on our road tax when leaving the coutry for extended periods . it gets very complex as to the rights of dvla etc to uplift vehicles and deprive the owner of it for good . if we did it we would have commited theft. but as we register our vehicles we sign to allow the government agencies the right to uplift. there is alot of info on the web about this. many things are also set by precedents . it takes many hours to find them sometimes . i dont think we should get too involved here but it can be fun searching facts. i do know we have to abide by the laws ,we dont set them .and must always keep a check to make sure authority is abiding by the same laws as us . very often they dont. have fun i do. cheers alan.good question though.

the trick is don't tell anyone you are out of the country for more than 6 month's otherwise it open's up can's of worm's believe me we lived in france for 5 years we still had a english address for bank's -vehicles - etc etc it pay's to keep your gob shut. happy camping

thats the way to do it. or get a new vehicle that doesnt need mot then get your road fund licence sent to uk address using computer or phone. glad mines mot exempt. hee hee.but maybe not for long. bu--er had a good 10yr though. cheers alan.

Just a reminder... don't forget to check when the photo-part of your license runs out!!!!!!!!! It's NOT the same as the counter part, as the photo is only good for 10yrs!

My 'complete' license runs out in 2046!!! But the photo-part runs out this December!!

The HUBB website had a long thread involving the DVLA, road tax, MOTs, etc.

Initially the DVLA responded to a "how do I keep my motorbike taxed during a two year round the world trip" - DVLA - "not a problem the UK has perpetual registration and the vehicle is only de-registered when destroyed or exported".

Within a few weeks there was a major backflip by the DVLA as they realised that to comply with the Vienna Convention (not just EU but a worldwide agreement) that the vehicle had to remain road legal in the country of registration and that MOT and tax would be due. Because the UK has persisted with "road tax" its unlikely that is payable if push came to shove as the vehicle does not have to pay a tax when not using the roads, but the MOT and insurance is the deal killer as they are 100% required - even though other countries dont have annual MOT type tests.

For non EU registered vehicles its very easy to buy green card insurance from German and Luxembourger companies. I'm always open to being bribed and getting a vehicle registered in Australia where (in three States) registration is paid over the internet!! with no annual road worthy testing (just on sale of vehicle with lots of on road inspections).

Hi Syldale. You & many others including myself for a time. not very bright of us though  considering that there is no road fund licence in France & MOT's are not due on vehicles until they are 4 years old, & then come round every 2 years.:)
Regards Nolly.

just about every country in eu as mot or something similar. but one countries mot is not good enough to get tax here . i cant say about others. its a very sore point with many travellers .the worst is this tasking and scrapping . by the aythotity. in some cases you dont need mot. there are 36 classes of exemption here in uk for over 3,500kg vehicles alone. even play buses are exempt. there is talk of it being narrowed down but we shall have to wait and see. its quite rare for you to need an mot for insurance use as even the mot says its only valid to prove roadworthyness at the time of test so its of no use really. mine is exempt and as been for 10yrs but still got paid out after a portugese driver hit me in quarteira a few years ago. no probs. as for insurance all policies taken out within the eu must cover for minimum ins cover all year while in eu. uk insurance companies will try to deny it but its true under an article 7(2)of an eec directive no.72/166/cee. we do need a rethink . but as we know common sense and being real dont come into law making. cheers alan.

Admiralty law

Dock, BIRTH cirtificate, lordSHIP, ladySHIP, worSHIP, COURTSHIP, the list is endless, parliament, =speaking lies, MORTgage=deathknot, Yes your correct, I am always fighting for our god given rights, why should we apply= begging, I was recently fined 350 pounds 15 victim costs and 85 pounds prosecutors costs, while all taxpayers are funding an illegal war in afganistan, which is illegal to fund a government doing so, also all fines go to the treasury, which then goes through the process of being spent, I have told the court I will only pay, if they provide a letter telling me none of my fine will be used towards the funding of a war of agression, and a letter excusing me from prosecution of aiding and abetting this government, the 15 pounds should go to myself, i think I am the victim here, sorry to ramble on, but more of us have got to make a stand, its too late complaining when were being put in the gas chamber!

hi manic . try googling .alan dawe speeding in chideock. that will tell you how i get annoyed with them. bet you laugh your socks off.

Well done m8, if they break their own rules, thats their lookout, glad you spotted their mistake and too k action, hope you got costs

i should be so lucky. but in the end i had a barrister they got payed . untill it went to crown court i fought it myself. then you arent allowed to speak for your self. mind you i still said alot. wish i could have had a tape recorder . you can tie them in knots. they think so slow. i would have had to sue for my personal loss . its still going on as we want them to pay both sides of the road . all measured from same place that dont exsist. never mind the sign was wrong. cheerrs thought you would like that. alan.
