Waste Tank Sensor

John Dough

The older types of waste tank sensors were never much good due to the type of water and stuff in waste tank corroding sensor probes etc

Normally if you disconnect the sensor wiring at the tank the reading will either go empty or full this will check your wiring out

What make is the Van?

Waste Tank Guage

Have just got a 97 Ducato and was told that waste tank sensor only shows when about 3/4 full. More reliable is shower not draining = full waste tank!

Ours shows full in the winter??? I took this to be salt water on the external conections on the side if the tank causing some sort of electrical tracking.

I took the spade terminals off, cleaned really well, re-fitted and COVERED in grease, no false readings this year; so the external fittings could be worth looking at.

intereresting topic really because, ours in our swift kontiki and has never worked.

must have a look one day!

Mine is a 2002 Ducato ands pretty useless too...corrosion moisture etc all seem to play their part from what I understand.

As ***** pointed out, the waste tank, fresh water tank or their ancillary equipment have nothing to do with Ducatos, Relays, Boxers, Fiat, Citroen or Peugeot.

If you want help, it makes more sense to tell us what conversion you've got, not what the base vehicle it is.
For instance, I have an Autosleeper based on a Boxer, someone else may have a Burstner based on a Boxer, the fittings and layout on mine will be totally different from theirs and problems I might have may or may not bear any relevance to their setup.

For Instance:
If someone wrote in to say that there was an acrid smell near the cooker when they used a hook up on their Boxer, it would not be much help. If they said there was an acrid ect.etc. on their Autosleeper Symphony then I for one would be able to tell them that the battery charger was under the seat just by the cooker and that it would probably be that which is faulty. I would also be able to tell them that the isolation switch for it was in the cupboard below the cooker.

On the other hand, if someone is having engine, gearbox, clutch or whatever, troubles on a Hymer Wonderwagon Mk2, those of us who are not Hymer aficionados would not be able to offer any help as we would not know what running gear/chassis a Hymer Wonderwagon Mk2 had.

Habitation type

Would it be a good idea to create a folder/subject for all types of habitation. Anyone with a problem could then easily find info and advice relevant to their specific model. Are there that many variations or would this be possible?

That's funny finding this question, I have just got a Luna Roadstar 800 2008, not been away in it yet, but have noticed that the waste gauge does not work on it, just had it service as well, it's only done 1500 miles, so it can't be wear and, can it?

Hi Dave,
Like ***** and Boxerman stated; services only apply to the engine and the van itself not to the habitation part.
Most of the time the waste-gauge tasters are covered with lime. If you can reach it: vinagre will help

Ours went haywire after only a few months use from new. We have an LED readout "gauge", single green one on for empty rising to five on for full. The symptoms were; lights on when I had just emptied and empty and full LED's on with nothing in the middle, regardless of what was in the tank. It was caused by grease depositing on the sensors. A couple of bottles of cheap cola down the sink and shower drains, drive around to swish it round a bit and, et voila, job done!

My Kontiki did not work, I did the same as nosher and found the sensor from outside underneath, removed the connections reconnected and sprayed with wd40. Works a treat now, although like the freshwater sensor anything under a 1/4 tank does not show anyway.

Its a 95 model and seems to go up and down in 1/4 tank leaps only. But thats good enough for me I'm a simple man, when the tap stops flowing time to fill up when the sink won't drain time to empty the grey :D

Yes its a C.I. actually and there is only a light no guage on the panel , I have fitted a drain hose on the overflow as it used to flow over the tank and on to the ground/grass and may not be noticed so now it exits at the habitation door and I can put a bucket there if I feel it is nearly full.

Mine is a CI and has I have already mentioned I have the same problem. Sat here now with the light on and the tank 100 percent empty.

I tend to read things from the freshwater tank ..i.e start with a full tank it shows half empty.the grey water tank must be half full.

I honestly dont think electrics are a CI's strongpoint in general, my van does some weird things electrically at times.

Nearly every motor home Ive owned the waste water gauge has been just that [a waste of time] none of them ever worked very well, some good advice has been given to you. My advice is ,just empty your tank at every opportunity at least every couple of days .

When it happened on our 2005 van I took the easy way out and stuck a piece of masking tape over the annoying red light - I think it got the message because it eventually went out.

Our sensor is prone to going off when the waste tank is near empty.

Our solution is to empty it completely. Then we half fill it with warm soapy water usually by having hot showers and pouring very hot water and a bit of extra washing up liquid down the sink. Then as quick as poss we go off on a bumpy road ride. (We never have to drive too far to find them!) Then we make sure we empty again and fully, before the waste tank redeposits whatever gunge is interfering with the sensor.

Its always sorted the problem so far.
