Hello campers, can I ask if there are any owners ex owners or anyone with knowledge of the following:-
1991 j reg Fiat Ducato Murvi Mentora Hightop, 2ltr petrol 71000mls. £3000. I have a bit of a downer on petrol due to low mpg. But sadly due to financial constraints may be forced down that road. what are early fiats like? especially parts & reliabillity,[seller is claiming only 2 owners & service records]
any idea what it might do regard mpg,if I went to look at it anything in particular I should either look for or listen for.
I think it may have been in stock a while!!!!! Any & all answers gladly recieved, I realise it may not be a lot of money to some but I canny afford to thro money at rubbish, may just as well stick with my own & keep spending a helluva lot of money on each MOT.So come on gang some one come up with you brickbats or roses.

Ducato parts.

I had a Ducato 1992. It is impossible to get original parts as they are obsolete. Scrapyards are the only place, then it is like looking for a needle in a hay stack. There is some guy on the Internet that is able to supply, I will have to come back to you if I can remember who it was when I needed head lights.You need to browse under "Ducato engine parts" I personally would avoid buying that Camper for £3000. Mileage don't add up for the year unless it is a second recon engine. Sorry, I couldn't be more of a help to you. Perhaps someone else can be of more assistance.

I had an 89 Talbot which is the same as the Ducato. It also had the 2L petrol engine. These engines are usually quite reliable, and reasonably economical.
Mine was a Autosleeper high top conversion, and it would do about 28 mpg on a run, and about 20 around town.
The mileage could very easily be genuine, there are loads of vans about that have only done between 3 & 5 thou miles per year.
The main prob on these is rust, on the chassis, around the sills, the bonnet, bottom of the cab doors, and below the windows. Its just a case of patching it up as it occurs on a van of this age. But saying that, i've seen plenty of 91 Ducato's/Talbots that have been rust free.
I would say that 3 grand is about right on the price, unless its a real dog. I would still try to knock a few hundred off though.

My thoughts on buying an older vehicle. Once over about 12-15yrs old the actual age of the camper is of much less significant, the condition of the camper is what counts, a 20yr old good one is better than a 12yr old poor one. When buying anything of this age forget resale values your probably going to run it into the ground. As far as reliability is concerned at this age, brand again like age, is of little significance, reliability reputations are (mainly urban myth) biult on vehicles less than 5yrs old. I also must disagree with David (& Ann) on the parts supply and suspect that they were looking in the wrong place, again for older vehicles forget the main dealers, your local motor factors are likely to be able to supply almost anything you are normaly likely to need new, and a search of the breakers most everything else, I admit older vehicles sometimes need a little modification and inginuity. For example headlights are listed by S.E.L. so would be available next day from a local motor factors.
As far as the mileage is concerned this at 4.5k per annum is not untypical for campers often they are little used second vehicle, I've seen them for sale with as little as 2.5K p.a.
Generaly fuel consumption on these seens to be about 22-24mpg, the diesels seem to do 28-30mpg so only about 20% difference, if you do high millage they seen to convert to gas quite well. As you would pay a couple of grand more for a diesel you would have a bit to play with either way.
On the face of it this seems to be a good buy, if it suits you, check it out thoroughly particularly for corrosion and if it all seems good go for it.
