Driving to Greece

We have made the trip to Greece once before driving down to Brindisi in Italy and taking the ferry to Igumanista in Greece.

I asked my insurance company if I could have a green card to take me through Serbia and they said "no".

I looked on my policy and found that I am allowed through Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and finally Greece.

This looked like a plan since all are members of the EU and a green card is not needed.

I went to google earth and tried to plot a route only to find that the Danube splits Romania and Bulgaria and there seems to be only one crossing the very east of Bulgaria.

It was very frustrating to put a town in Romania into Google Earth and one about ten miles away in Bulgaria to find that the journey was around 300 miles.

Does anyone know of a simple way of getting through Romania and into Bulgaria coz i sure don't. Any help much appreciated.

Have a look at your green insurance card:
'SRB' (= Serbia) is mentioned under the EU countries and it is valid for Serbia. A green card is needed and valid in all EU countries

Hi;

My certificate of insurance includes a green card translation on the rear of the document (Comfort) but I don't think it's compulsory to have one for EU countries anymore (?).

I'd agree about the Magbaz site, a great source of info.

I done this route Bulgaria to Romania a couple of years ago. The crossing is Calafat to Vidin by ferry which was not a problem so go for it. There is so much to see out there it's well worth the journey so try not to rush through too quickly.

Hi there, maybe i can answer a couple of your questions,as i have travelled to Bulgaria 3 times in 3 years.(i live there now)
Serbia isn't a problem, you can pay for insurance at the border,a bit of a rip off,if your just passing through as its around 120 euro,i dont think you will find a UK company with a green card for Serbia (its not in the EU...yet)approx 9 hour drive through, good well travelled road, make an itinary out of your goods and print out, just incase asked for, speed trap not far from exiting border with police car (for bribe) :).
Other route,Germany ,Austria,Hungary,Romania and Bulgaria....no probs,AND there are several crossings of the Danube into Bulgaria, some by bridge (further down) and some by ferry, the closest being Calafat, and a 15/20 minute crossing.
Dont forget the Vigettes for different countries purchaced just before or at borders, only approx 7 euro each...try looking at via-michelin route planner or ask again on here,if your still stuck, and i can give you MY route taken, service stations are excellent especially Germany/Austria.
Why not the Italy/Greece route ?because you've done it and want another scenic route ?
The other routes are the long way round .

Hi Pete,
The green card is the same for all EU countries, same lay-out. so the British one will comply for EU - only the use of language is different-. The same applies for the (blue) accident papers. No translation needed.
A remark about Serbia: Look at the right half of the card; under 4: .... only for the republic Montenegro and the geographical parts of Serbia under controle of the republic of Serbia...
Yours,
Leo
