You have to find somewhere with wifi before using it, If you have a dongle you can be anywhere really. ;)

Please explain further of knowledgeable one....does the dongle have a great range? Does it operate on the same frequency as the "wireless" in the laptop???

I find I can access more wifi sites using my dongle than with the internal wifi. I can also increase the range by using it on the end of a USB extension cable as I can put it in a more favorable position. To get a bit further make something like the dish I put on the 'Broadband Malaky' thread or do a search for 'chinese cookware wifi' on Google.

A dongle is like a mobile phone It has a sim card inserted in it so it really depends on where you are and which network you are with, ie t-mobile, vodafone, orange, three network. These are relatively new and different people have different ideas about them. have a look on here do a search with keyword dongle see what comes up.:):)

Hold up just a minute.....I think you are a bit confused on this one...I'm no expert, but there is a simple principal here..if I can explain.
A wifi enabled laptop just means that it can 'access' a wifi signal from a wifi modem. it could be a wifi modem as supplied by Mc Donalds, or a Caravan site, or your 'home hub'....OR, a 'dongle'..which is only a mobile modem. So you need both..not either/or.
I do hope this helps a bit, and perhaps someone else will be along soon to elaborate on my explaination.

Jackie ;)

I suspect 'fugglestick' is asking for the difference in performance between an inbuilt wifi card and a wifi dongle connected via the USB. The main advantages of the later is that can use a long lead (up to 5M) and position the 'dongle' outside the van or somewhere you may be able to get better reception. Also with some external USB WiFi devices it is possible to get an external directional aerial which can achieve in the right conditions connections over several km as 'Kontiki' says. All this assumes there is a suitaqble wifi network available,

To most folk a 'dongle' is shorthand for a modem that connects to the mobile phone network.

There is the GSM dongle & the wifi dongle, one uses a SIM card to access the internet over the mobile phone network. The other is a wifi dongle which you can plug into your USB port to give you wifi. I had one for my old laptop which didn't have built in wifi but can use it to give me a better signal on my new laptop than the internal wifi.

DONGLE is a small piece of hardware that connects to a laptop or desktop computer so anything you fancy sticking into your USB is a dongle:eek:
