Dogs following ******

This may be of interest to dog owners.

I don't have a dog but my son does. He got a letter this week from the vet stating that following ****** the UK will be classed as a third country and the rules about taking dogs into EU (and I guess other pets) will change.
It was quite a long letter but the main point was that if you wish to take your dog into the EU once we leave it will have to have had a series of Rabbies vaccinations. This series of vaccinations will take around 4 months to complete and of course you will have to be able to prove them.

AFAIK this is not confirmed, we are not going to know the rules until next year at this rate.

Pet travel to Europe after ****** - GOV.UK

Here's the official news and They don't know Yet any thing is just speculation and Vets hoping to make a killing

It was on a political debate programme yesterday, The MP concerned categorically stated that as things stand the passport scheme will finish in March next year. Unless there is separate negotiation and suggested in the immeadiate future non are planned we are a third country and to comply with SPS regulations abroad a more thorough regime will be adopted . it was recommended due to timescles anyone in the EU with a dog cat or ferret come march needs to be talking to their vet now

For anyone affected I would personally have a chat with my locally approved DEFRA vet a call to DEFRA will tell you are they are

In light of the uncertainty, we're doing Devon and Cornwall next spring.

I think many of the folk on here including me require medication for more than rabbies.:scared::lol-053::lol-053::lol-053::lol-053:Woof.

I shouldn't worry about it. Credit ain't going to happen.

This does not make sense because the Rabbies threat is no different after ****** as is is before, and besides we don't have Rabbies they do, so it is to protect the uk not us spreading it to Europe.

If outside the UK with your dogs after March 29th you need to check if your existing EU pet passport will allow your return to the UK ...

Clever loophole

I have my doubts.

The passports are identified as EU documents with the country of issue.

It is possible that after ****** that the UK authorities will no longer recognise the validity of an EU pet passport so the pet in question may not be able to return as easily as it does now.

Holding a pet passport issued in France presumably will permit admission to the EU.

So it solves half the potential problem.

Wont work for motorhomers / travellers unless you had an address in France or other EU country for the pets passport to be issued. Perhaps get away with it if you know someone living in EU that wouldn't mind you using their address.

It might take a short amount of time to make the necessary arrangements but it is inconceivable that the UK, rabies free and with some of the most stringent rabies control measures in the world, would not be treated as a listed third country rather than an unlisted country. A "listed third country" is essentially inside the pet passport area so no additional measures such as titer tests and so on are necessary. Listed third countries include Switzerland, Norway, Canada, Aus, NZ and Chile including some countries where rabies is prevalent such as Mexico, Russia and the United States.

The only reason that the EU might oppose the UK's immediate status as a listed third country would be as a punishment for ******, and if that were the case then we're better off out of such a toxic relationship.

FWIW I have taken three dogs out of an back into the EU from Albania into Greece, from Turkey into Bulgaria and from Russia into Estonia and not once were EU officials in the least bit interested in following the correct procedures - scanning the pets' microchips and checking the passport. Not one of them even looked at the passports! I might have well have had an elephant in the back seat for all they cared. The process is a joke. The ONLY time I have ever had the animals properly checked was on re-entry to the UK, where everything is always done by the book. The UK should be imposing rabies control measures on the EU not the other way around. It's a farce.

As far as I understand it the process is concerned with the animal's origin and whether correct measures have been adhered to, rather than the nationality of the owners. It does raise some interesting questions. I'm in Portugal at the moment. My dog's pet passport was issued in the UK, but his last rabies jab was done in France. I'll be following this with interest to see if there is any advantage in having a new passport issued here in Portugal.

Have I read the Gov guidance correctly...if we leave Uk before 29/3/19 and return from EU into Uk after that date the current rules should apply even if no deal ******?

Dogs following ******?
Well good on them. With the rest of the country following ******, it is heartening to know our canine friends are as well.
They are probably more politically informed than many of the populace appear to be.
Yowza! Korky.

I didn't read it that way. I don't believe that scenario is covered at all ...

I have a fallback plan to return on or before March 29 with my dogs if there should be a problem.
