I thought that other members might be interested in the following.

Two years ago I looked into the idea of fitting a SOG toilet system in our Mobilvetta Orsa Minori but because the toilet access door is buried deep inside the very narrow ski locker it was obvious that the installation of micro switch mechanism was going to be a struggle. Also I thought that the cost of something which I had doubts about being really effective was too high for my pensioner's pocket. So I made my own.
Micro switch fitted on the side of the loo casing operated directly by the slider operating lever. Washing machine corrugated waste pipe from loo emptying tube to rear wall of van. Plastic sink waste fitted to inside van wall with computer cooling fan sandwiched between it and wall. Vent cover outside van.
Total cost including two spare microswitches, and two spare fans. €21(euros)

Still working fine. No smells chemical or otherwise. No cost for fluids etc.

After we fitted our SOG when we were touring Germany we met quite a few Germans who had made their own examples of SOG's. We were fortunate with our latest van that has a similar system fitted by Thetford. I personally find it works fine, some people disagree & don't rate them. Emptying the toilet is unpleasant but I don't find that the chemical solution makes this task any more enjoyable.

Dealing with the toilet is never pleasant (especially after a curry). However I use the Green Thetford fluid, as I'd rather have the smell of Cabbage rather then the usual un-holy smell that is created without.
Fitted a SOG for a customer not so long ago, easy enough to fit. Other reservation I have with them is on aires parked right next door to someone whom has one fitted!! You get the occational woft of "Eau du Bog" everytime they flush the loo. Based on this, it concerned me with the one we fitted as the cassette toilet was the same side as the Hab door. This means every time you flush, the smell would be under the awning. Nice when you're doing a BBQ and the wife uses the loo whilst your cooking :(. Think I will stick to Green abroad and Blue here, not cheap but I'd rather pay the money and have a cassette that smells of cabbage with everything broken up to make for easy cleaning!
On a different note, has anyone heard about using Washing detergent (liquid) in to fixed Black tanks (like on the RV's??? Apparently it works better than the toilet chemical and smells better?? Not too sure about it and not too sure I want to try on such a small cassette tank.

Yes Nick, it's the bio tablets you want!!! (Really cheap if you buy a box of Tesco's own).

Crush one up and chuck it down the sink, rise away with a kettle of near boiling water, we have two sinks, so that's just two tab's per rinse. Leave the solution to slosh around for a while and you'll have an odour free tank.

I find it only needs doing a couple of times a year, normally done on site at the end of the season, empty tank on site, add tab's & drive home, empty into a bucket or bowl and leave open for the winter, add a drop of anti freeze down the plug holes and shower trap to prevent freezing - job done!

Hi Nick,

I have been using cheap Aldi or Lidl bio liquid instead of the Thetford blue chemical additive (even though I have a sog fitted). It is very good and has a nice smell.

Some people use dishwasher tablets. This might be even better as some of them contain an additive to prevent the build up of limescale.

Sorry Nosha but I will have to slap your wrist for using antifreeze in your waste traps. It will ultimately finish up in the drains and is classed as a toxic substance.

The alcohol will also knacker the rubber o-rings and seals. Mouth wash with alcohol does the same. I was told this by Peter Hambilton when we got our bathroom sink replaced. Joan.
