Disposing of waste

If you can't make up your own out of scrap rebar steel and welding, then Screwfix sell a Manhole Remover tool (won't fit all) but better than nothing, and along with say a couple a tyre levers usually does the trick. They can be very heavy and rusted in place.
Discretion is the thing, picking lightly used roads eg.

Agreed. I had already decided against trying it on the M25.

It also occurred to me to wear a hi vis jacket.

But how can I tell (in the UK) which is sewage and which is surface water drainage (perhaps into nearby water courses)?

No obvious way (unless marked of course) until you lift the cover and even then not always obvious. Even if you find a sewer manhole it can be of 2 main configurations one can be used, the other not you don't know until you lift the cover.
A high vis jacket is just what you don't want to wear; if caught in the UK it's a mandatory life sentence. The M25 is a cunning place to lift a manhole cover, nobody will believe that it isn't official!

I think these suggestions are very risky, public toilets wouls be a better proposition. They are usually in tourist area and some remote carparks. If they are locked there WILL be a manhole to use.

i have 2 different sizes of keys? but only do it as a last resort usually look for a beehive type industrial estate after tea never been confronted while doing it, just make sure to replace it safe and not drop it inside:dance:

I have much to learn, Yoda.

Emptying into public is an idea that had occurred to me, but I am just a bit worried by reactions from other women using the same toilet. But, the existence of a manhole just outside the toilet block hadn't occurred to me. Yes, I think I like this idea better.

It has always been the issue of waste, for me, that determines when I need small, cheap CL, in the UK. But slowly, I am learning some of the tips and tricks.

use toilet training . keep your eyes open in shops bars etc lirary you name it they have loos .use them and keep the use of yours down to a minimum.
i find a couple of big old screw drivers best for lifting manhole covers . bit dificult to say which ones to use in uk. lift them and look. byronic can spell the way in spain. i cant always smell it wrong. sorry thats a pistake.
never tip into street drains the rain gulley,s ,in spain it may not rain for ages and causes a big stink.you can always ask around most sewage works will possibly let you tip there aswell. always down a hill by a stream. shown on ordanance maps as a works. might be an interesting afternoon for you if you ask questions.

Only as risky as you make it, as I've previously written,I pick a quiet road (eg in an industrial estate out of hours) park up legally as close to the manhole as possible so that it is no more risky than making a check under the bonnet. I ALWAYS replace the cover. I don't wild or otherwise camp much in the UK so have only gone through this procedure a couple of dozen times over the years, now Spain thats another matter altogether.
As for M/Hs outside Public toilets, great if you can find one where the M/H is external, a lot are sealed and internal, personally I don't like to remove a M/H cover in Public view, further it may also attract the attention of the Council jobsworth, after all you are interfering with Council/Public property.

Hello all, I live in a small street and between 12 houses we have a large spetic tank, i was wondering if i could disposed of my toilet waste into it. The only reason i asked this is that i know some checimals used in toilets can`t be really put in a sewer drain. It needs to be dispose/empty in a proper factilty on a site?.......
It may seem a silly question but i dont want to empty it in there and it buggers it up has i dont think my neighbours would like me.......:)

Hi, Tclarkie,

Simple answer is do not use nasty chemicals based on chlorine bleach or formalin.

Richard

I will read the label on the bottle tomoz before i decide to empty it...

Thanks Richard for info....

i used to drive sewage tankers and have emptied hundreds of tanks .best i can say is dont use any chemicals in your toilet .use a tea spoon of vinegar if required or a tablet of cheap washing powder. sewage breaks down much quicker if we use natural bacteria . never wash the tank part of your toilet . inside . you can the outside . just tip and use again. let the bacteria grow. even better leave a smidgen in the bottom of cassette . if you do go on sites you will possibly have seen special drop off points for chemical toilets thats because chemicals from pota potties kills the sewage works on site. its an incredible cost for them to empty the works and import good bacteria ridden s--t. even south west water sites here get into trouble in summer with holiday makers dumping too much chemical contaminated s--t into toilets in village toilets. sewage is a very interesting science. i also worked fresh water sites and that is even more interesting. all campers should visit a local water /site and get info.

Thats just typical,i just knew when i saw this thread that you would be on here talking ****.

Waste is the word you are looking for. Talking waste! :rolleyes2:

Alan, can you say some more on this?

It has been a very long time since my chemistry A-level, but vinegar is an acid and washing powder is an alkali. And yet both work in toilet tank??:confused:

right . while working in the sewage industry i asked many questions . i saw several dumping lines not for chemical toilet waste .as a camper user .i aked why . because the chemicals actually kill the natural bacteria used in the treatment of sewage was the answer ,. i was told by one scientist to just put a teaspoon of vinegar in the cassette , it works after a few fills the bacteria starts to live in the cassette and eats the waste . breaking down the solids very quickly.
another one said use ablock of washing powder or liquid washing powder . best get the bio one i was told . i tried it seems to work. now i dont use either. i leave a bit in when not using the van to let the bacteria grow. never wash the inside ,or chuck loads of water in . pours out easy and like i said after the first couple of uses there is hardly any smells . if in very hot climates i might add washing powder . have used a cheap hair shampoo. but only do this if it gets very hot and notice a smell. also dont be too keen to keep emptying .let it get quite full . helps the bacteria feed . nature can work wonders and costs very little .
by the way dont waste your money on the so called green chemicals they mess up the natural bacteria as well.
