we have just rang 999 for an ambulance for my daughter who gave birth 4 days ago . she collapsed with severe stomach pain .i rang for an ambulance .and it took 50 mins for an ambulance to arrive not the paramedics fault they were fantastic . we rang 3 times i gave the symptoms of shock query internal bleeding that is possible after a birth . i explained i was ex emergencey service personell and gave them the symptoms the 999 opperator said a doctor would attend , i was accused of being abusive when i demanded an ambulance to attend a.s.a.p a doctor turned up within 15 mins he i give him his due he had to request an ambulance to attend immediatly and the opperator questioned him about the need for an ambulance to attend. what is happening to our health service . when even a doctor cannot demand assistance from the emergency services . without being questioned :mad::mad::mad:

Hi
I am sorry to hear about your daughter and hope she is well soon.
You are so right that service is frightening and the unfortunate part of it is the paramedics try their best to make a broken system work under orders from the faceless senior management.

Best wishes to you and your family

Rob

I recently had to call an ambulance out to my wife in the middle of the night. I was really worried about her condition. I initially rang NHS direct who told me they would get a Nurse Practitioner to ring me back - but it would take at least four hours! I wondered whether she would last that long. They could not offer an alternative, so I rang 999 and the ambulance was there within about 5-6 mins. We live about three miles from the Ambulance Station and as they had to cross the town, I think they did very well.

The Para's were great, I couldn't believe how much paperwork they had to fill in. In the end they decided to take her to hospital. Not our local hospital two miles away, but the big hospital 15 miles away. It seems they were not allowed to take her to our local hospital, - I could have done , but not them.

We arrived to find all the cubicles (24 of them) occupied (at 2.00am on a Tuesday morning!) and a lack of staff to deal with the number of patients. So much so that my wife was Triaged in the minor injuries unit. It took another three hours for a doctor to see her, although she was given care by the nurses. I wondered why they were so busy at this time on a Tuesday "This is a quiet night" I was told.

I am glad to say that in the event my wife survived and later returned home. I certainly appreciated the work by all of the staff I MET, but they clearly are stretched. I am just glad it wasn't a Saturday night.

Mandrake, I hope you daughter is now OK. I know how worrying it is when faced down the phone with an (apparently) uncaring telephone operator.

I think the UK is going to have to bite the bullet about the NHS and basically start excluding people who dont qualify by birth right to the services or have not paid into the scheme. Perhaps a system where two grandparents and one parent have to be born in the UK to qualify for NHS or NI services. Allow a buy in for non qualifiers of say 30,000UKP per person at age 21 on a sliding scale upto 200,000UKP for persons upto 65. Everyone else gets the US Treatment option - cash up front at private hospitals.

Hi Mandrake,

Again, sorry to hear about your daughter and I am sure we all wish her a speedy recovery.
As a past member of the emergency services I am sure you are aware of the pressures on the wide variety services provided. However it is important that there are no weak links in the chain so if you feel you have found one may I suggest that you write to the Medical Director of the hospital that your daughter was taken to. Your conversations may well have been recorded and he has the power to act on any evidence provided. He will reply to your complaint and tell you what action has been taken.

Richard

initiative, discretion, common sense and your own judgement are all removed from call centre staff:mad: on the computer screen they have a set Q/A anything outside this remit and they're ferked ? i'll have to ask my supervisor (some one with a full half a brain who can kiss arse ) and this is where half the UK work force is now employed.
the country's ferked i tell you ferked

thanks for the replies she is ok and recovering at home i aggre the nhs is doing a great job under extreme presure its a shame that the call center where we have to go to first is not up to the job

Hi, Glad your daughters on the mend. In Wales the Ambulance service is a trust in it's own right and the local hospital trust have no control over the Ambulance service.

Their website is: Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust | Home

My wife is a manager in the local trust and has to work with the Ambulance trust, the guys on the ground are great the the managers...........

To use an engineering term; They don't know if their a**e hole is punched, bored or reamered.

There may have been some changes made to the NHS.

I was in my Doctors surgery the other day and he had a strange message on the board. It said that if any of his patients used A & E, it cost him on average £87. Something is up.

So sorry to hear about your daughter Mandrake, I hope she has a speedy recovery.

Glad to hear your daughter is on the mend and I agree with others that you really should follow up the complaint to help ensure that others don't sufffer the same nonsense in future. We had something similar when my sister recently had to be taken to hospital but (and I know it's not much help to you at the moment) when my wife needed treatment in Spain we were treated well, efficiently and fast - it can be done if they put their mind to it; if Spain can do it, there is no excuse.

phone complaint made today ,a formal letter laying out what happend and a explanation wanted why myself and then a doctors request was questioned by a south wales ambulance control opperator .as i said in an earlier post it took 50 mins and two requests ,one from a doctor before an ambulance arrived

Glad your daughter as fine Mandrake,i thought she had given birth months ago:confused:or has time passed that quick that she has already had another:D
The thing is its not a real suprise, there are so many people crammed into this small isle of ours, that it is no real shock to find things the way they are.Broken and unfit for service.
Never mind im sure that once the census details are in we can all be accomodated as the goverment will know how many people really live in this country, legal and otherwise, and work out costings properly for our local councils. That will be another rise in fuel duty then,me thinks.
