Difference between Oil 10W/40 and 10W/40 A3 B4 ?

Hi there - so I bought some 10W/40 A3 B4 by mistake - I usually get the plain 10W/40 - both are part-synthetic.

I have a 30 year old VW T4 1.9 X1 (or is it 1X?) diesel engine.

Are there any issues here with putting the 10/40 A3 / B4 in and it mixing with the plain 10/40 I currently have in there?

Cheers,
Melissa

Sure it's just a european rating for oils. Sure it's not A3 B4?

I'd use it but best wait for more knowledgable people to comment.

A1 Fuel economy petrol
A2 Standard performance level (now obsolete)
A3 High performance and/or extended drain
A4 Reserved for future use in certain direct injection engines
A5 Combines A1 fuel economy with A3 performance

B1 Fuel economy diesel
B2 Standard performance level (now obsolete)
B3 High performance and/or extended drain
B4 For direct injection car diesel engines
B5 Combines B1 fuel economy with B3/B4 performance

Link to codes.

It will be fine, the A3/B4 bit means it’s suitable for high performance engines and the oil will stay “in grade” when longer drain intervals are specified by the manufacture.

Cheers all - Yes Mark i did mean B4 - I must have changed it in my original title at the same time as you were posting ! ;-)

My engine doesn't have injectors (B4) - but i'm getting the vibe it doesn't really matter so think i will just lob it in!

Thanks everyone!

Melissa
