Hi folks, can anyone recommend a data only sim that's not on a contract? I was gifted a wifi unit a few years ago by a dear friend here, which was working upto last year so I do not know whether it has died or just the card I was using

Try taking the sim from your phone and putting it into WiFi router. If it works ok then you know it’s the SIM card that’s not functioning. You don’t need a data SIM card if your router is unlocked any sim with data will work.

We made a bad choice when we bought a data-only SIM where we could buy a month's worth at a time. The mistake was that it cost £13 for 40GB but a normal SIM gave us 100GB for £12 from the same company (Smarty). If your wifi router lets you log on and access SMS messages, you don't need a data-only SIM.
Which is best depends upon which network you want to use and virtual mobile network operators are almost always cheaper than the host network (e.g. Smarty is usually cheaper than Three for the same amount of data and Tesco Mobile is cheaper than O2).
Note that (strictly) these are 'pre-pay contract accounts' with 30-day minima, but you can turn off auto-renew and (for Smarty and Tesco at least) buy another 30 days-worth when you need it.

Thank you for that, this daft old soul had never thought that the two were compatible, oh I do hate technology !!!!!

What we use is a prepaid Three sim from scancom. They do one that allows 80GB per month (that's what we use in the car) and one that allows 500GB per month (which is more than we need for the motorhome).
The motorhome one ran out last month, so I had to buy another. It cost £70 and gives 500GB per month until 8 November 2027. That's 30 months, so it works out at £2.33 per month.

Also look at onepenny mobile, you can either buy a year or one mth at a time when required, handy site to use.

10GB would last me a few days, for data I use either 3 or EE unlimited data Sims from Scancom, there are some good offers on for pre-loaded cards

100gb (which is what I would order for a week away) for £13.50 So £1.50 dearer than Smarty - I already have a 1p account so it's just so easy to arrange in a few seconds and for the sake of £1.50 who cares! :)
My thinking to Rob. (y)
