I was thinking of getting a Smarty sim for our Mifi for two months in Scotland. However looking at their coverage map I not so sure now. It looks very patchy and they seem to have hardly any in the north of Scotland. Any better suggestions would be appreciated.

I think Smarty uses the Three Network.
My understanding is EE Provides the best coverage and highest download speeds there. If you have BT at home then a BT sim uses the EE Network and can be had for a reasonable price.

EE are excellent up here
But there are areas with poor coverage.
In some areas such as Mull only Vodafone works.
But I would say that you wont do better than EE overall.

Thanks Bill. That’s what I suspected. If so as a broadband customer with them I can get a discounted deal with Plusnet who piggyback on EE.

I use EE and my wife has Vodafone - with those two it is rare that we cannot get a signal anywhere in Scotland. If I had to choose just one then I would go for EE. Bizarrely 3 is the only one that gives us any form of a signal at home so our EE and Vodafone mobiles have to hot spot off 3 when we use them at home!

I usually use a 3 sim in the Mifi, but in the Outer Hebrides last year coverage was crap. I swapped the Plusnet sim out of my phone, into the Mifi to get some contact.

I’ve already ordered a free sim from Vodaphone to go with a 5x data bundle, £10 for 15gb. Enough for our modest needs but the small print is somewhat mind boggling...anyone tried this?

A little late but i`ll put my 2 penneth in, over the years i`ve had Orange, Vodafone, Tesco ( O2 ) and found them bloody useless in the north of Scotalnd.

Went over to Three many many years back and IMHO it`s been the best of them by quite a way.

The wife has had Orange then transferred over to EE and found it slightly better but came over to Three when she got fed up of me having a signal when she didn`t.

Yes, there are some black ( oops sorry, not allowed to use that word now ) areas where there is little or no signal but they all have.

Because Smarty is part of the Three network i would go along with that one.

Ok I live up here and the best two networks by a country mile are EE and Vodafone. I am with 3 and in many rural parts they are useless. But unlike the rest 3 don’t lock their phones, so you can use sims from others. My wife is on EE. I carry a Vodafone PAYG sim which I use when 3 does not work. For normal use in urban areas 3 offers the best deal, but when in rural locations take my word for it, it has to be EE or Vodafone. I have heard that soon it won’t make any difference when the government makes providers use each other’s transmitters, but don’t know if and when it will happen.

We've used Three for several years which is the same network as Smarty.
We go to Scotland a lot. Occasionally no signal if somewhere remote, but generally pleased with the coverage
