The Castle Inn at Lydford is in the Nightstop Scheme, so you can stay there. I think it's free if you are eating/drinking in the pub.

A few more 'non-campsite' stopovers in the south west in my listing here: Overnight stopovers for motorhomes in the UK and Ireland including the Practical Motorhome Nightstop Scheme locations

Note that these pointless and silly schemes are not of any use and not free.Any pub e.t.c will let you stay if you are spending money with them just ask before you buy.As long as you only stay for one night and dont outstay your welcome there are loads of places to park up just use one of these. There are rangers about but i have had no bother yet.Just make sure you talk all your rubbish home with you as im sure you would.

Our visit to cornwall

We have just returned from cornwall and also set off on the 28th of dec. first we stopped in weston super mere on clarence rd south with no problems, We had then planned to stop in datrmoor at 'the forest inn' pub a 'free stop over' with a landlord that was very pleasant helpful on the phone, but with it being in a national park we found it a little difficult to get through certain areas with our 23ft van and having only had it 3wks we eventually gave up and continued through to the sight we had booked from the 29th dec -1st jan 2012 'tregoad park in' looe we had no issues booking an additional night but found the roads in looe a little scary especially when we ventured to talland bay and got stuck - we eventully made it out after a risky run up out of a small sandy sloped car park on a bend on a hill with a van that should not have gone anywhere near the bay but our snooper had given us the ok???? would you trust your snooper???? A lovely car park stop over would be in Seaton we only visited for the day with our son and 2 dogs but would definetly go back. Hope you enjoyed your travells, how was your trip?
Happy new year from us

Have to say that I don't think that the Nightstop Scheme is pointless or silly.

And I disagree that 'any' pub will let you stay if you are spending money - it's true that many will let you stay, but we have certainly been refused more than once.

The point about the Nightstop Scheme is that it gives the pubs the reassurance that they are operating within planning rules, and motorhome users the reassurance that they will be welcomed.

Of course it's not 'wild camping' and is not for everyone, but it is another alternative to staying on a campsite.

As i stated if you ask before buying any food or drink first then you know where you are.If they say no then you go to another establishment and spend your money there.I would be extremely suprised if you were turned away and would also make sure that a manager is asked and not any old employee.

Got to say though its an expensive way to spend the night,as a wildcamper its the last place we would be and its just a bit of a shame that these pubs are on the great poi list we have on this site.A quiet street or cheap cl would be the better alternative options for us wildcampers.

Why is it a shame?

There are lots of pub stopovers in the POI Download, many more than those in the Nightstop Scheme (which are included too).

There will be occasions when you might want a meal and a drink, and your night's parking is effectively free ...
