The more I look into this it's not as straight forward as I first thought. I think I need an infrared pointing device that can measure moisture behind the surface I point it at. I'm sure dealers use this technology to assess damp when you trade in Motorhomes.

If you buy the cheap ones all the ones that I have seen (and in fact I have got) rely on two pointed prongs that puncture the surface that you are trying to measure and you end up with a camper that looks like it has got woodworm. The testers the dealers use do not need to put holes in the surface of the area you are testing - but they cost hundreds!! My advice, take it to a dealer.

As said the cheap ones (including the Aldi/Lidl ones) use two needle prongs but there are cheap non-invasive ones from China available. No experience of them myself.

I like that, and the fact that it has a 'hold' button, something the other cheapos like mine don't have, which in my experience now is essential.

This is slightly off at a tangent but.......
Last week Lidl had hand-held infra-red thermometers for £15. I wondered if one of these would be a good idea because we only discovered a hidden moisture (lots of) ingress when the sun shone on the side of the van on a cold morning & revealed condensation on the outside of the body in one particular spot. Would the damp bits be colder????

If you have a good van and intend keeping it you want good results then buy the best the meter the professionals use a Protimeter Mini, expensive maybe but mine is 15 years old a 35480 and still as good as new, mine came with a add on heavy duty remote 2 pin probe plus a calibration chart for all know types of wood
