| had a letter today from a company claiming that my property could be in the wrong Council Tax band and offering to try and get it downgraded and would only charge me if they were successful 30 % in total , 30% of any money I get refunded that is. Has anyone gone this route and does anyone know the procedure for doing this ones self?

Some houses on my estate were in the wrong tax band and got a letter from the Authority that examines the banding issues. A week later I got the same letter that you got. Nobody (as far as I know) used this company and were downgraded free of charge by the Council.

I cannot remember the name of the department that handles the banding issue but a google should soon find them.

I complained when they first started this and got ours reduced by 2 bands, not sure how they would go about it retrospectively.

hi malc .just pay your local council offices a visit . they can show you a list of what ever band all your neighbours are on . if you think your paying too much ask if its correct and say you think its wrong . they normally will have a look see whats happening .very often agree and drop it. always worth a go.

Contact your local Council and ask for a Council Tax review. That's all this company will do and then have the cheek to charge you for it!!!

Did you enjoy the Cuckoo Fair - sorry we missed you.

I am quite happy with the tax band we are in [ E, ] but this letter came out of the blue so got me interested [ a little bit ] yes great the Cuckoo Fair wasn't it really good show and the newborn Lambs too, and sorry we missed you too, I did look around for you but only found one set of Wilders there.

We got ours downgraded last year and back dated for 2 years too. But it was a long hard struggle as the previous owners had also tried (and failed I might add) a few years earlier. Seems the rules state it can only be contested once but we found some errors in calculations of size so appealed on that front.
Hubby worked hard on the web :pc: finding out the rateable values of other nearby properties, some 1 bedroom larger than ours and a band lower! He took aerial photos and presented a very comprehensive case to the authorities. At first he was refused but wouldn't take no for an answer and pushed for arbitration. 2 days before he was due to go to the meeting he had to send all the papers into the court. Within hours the council contacted him and said they were withdrawing and would down grade us one band. Victory for the little man

So the moral of this story is get your facts right, have a strong case and don't take no for an answer. But make sure you are right about everything as you only get one shot at it.

I challenged our banding 2 years ago when I discovered the identical property 3 doors away was banded a 'B' and we're 'E'. I received the standard reply stating that any band re-assessments have to be made within 6 months of moving in but then the Valuation Officer visited, measured all the rooms, photographed the house inside and out and then vanished for a month. We were unlucky - our house remained in the same banding but our neighbours had theirs increased. During the process it was also discovered that errors had been made on other properties, including 4-bed detached properties being mistaken for 1-bed flats and banded as 'A'. There were a lot of very unhappy people locally and I kept my head down for some time....!

I've just found this quick video about claiming council tax discounts or applying for a different band. It is well worth trying, but it also warns of two main problems....

1. Make sure you look into it properly before contacting the council... in case they find you should be in a HIGHER band!!

2. Be wary of anyone who contacts you offering to investigate on your behalf (as in the original post). It may be a scam to get your bank and personal details etc., but also because you can do it all yourself for free.
