cornish councils!

just come back after spending christmas in cornwall, empty carparks threatning hefty fines and clamping for overnite stopping! we would have paid to stay in some of these carparks, what is their problem? perhaps they don't need cash in winter.scotland is wildcamping friendly perhaps the cornish councils should copy some of the scottish hospitality!:

Having had the luxury of French Aires these past couple of years I can say I've just about given up on Southern England with Councillors sitting on their backsides putting up charges and restrictions leaving the car parks empty! Cornwall, Devon and Dorset are the main culprits but I must give credit to Teignbridge where efforts are being made.

Although, with my Transit base, I am happy to park up in any side street where I'm causing no problem it's worth mentioming that there are a few good little sites in Cornwall to use as a base for as little as £9 a day all-in (including electric, dogs, pup-tent what-have-you). Pengoon Farm comes to mind.

Otherwise my motto is to 'Vote with your wheels'.

You're right, I lived there for 21 years and its as feudal as the 16th century, all the councils are controlled by farmers, indiginous workers are paid peanuts and half the councillors cann't walk and talk at the same time, the least progressive part of the UK imho.

What Cornish!

Not just Cornish councils but many of the Cornish people, treats all 'emmits' with the same poor attitude. They do have some point when you look at any coastal village and town full of retired Londoners. Having lived there a few years, was glad to move out but the problem is not only Cornwall extents to all of Southern England. In general where retiring 'inner M25' 'rule the roost' rather than the locals, they demand no change to their 'pretty postcard' mentality!

which would be fine if they kept it 'postcard pretty' - far to much greed about for that, I think the average Brit ' entrepeneur' won't let a good unspoilt view intrude if there is a fast buck to be made - bottom line they want your money, not complain about the overpriced crap service/crap food/crap beach/crap accommodation and then want you to piss off pronto when you've spent it.... and not ot forget to come back for more next year or you are somehow letting the side down.

It makes me shudder when i consider the price/service/facilities comparisons with (say) Spanish hotel accommodation and the 'quaint' (run down!) B&B's here.... and then they wonder why we use our vans - its simples - it's a damned sight more comfortable, the food is generally perfect, the booze reasonable - and the service is far better!

Happy New Year everyone

At the end of the M5 put in a big island with a wall around so we can chuck our hard earned money over it and say we have been to Corneywell then go home as they dont want us there just our money stopped going there years ago just a rip !:)

Living on the South Coast

I live on the South Coast and have lived in Cornwall so I have an informed opinion!

Yes, I can relate to this. We done cornwall last year.
The no overnight parking signs are so annoying.

A couple of times, i have just ignored them - I think there more of a deterent than anything.

What you have to remember is that now Cornwall is basically London-on-sea. I remember going there thirty years ago when it really was a place you would happily move to, and property was reasonably priced too, now you need a lottery win to buy a house there!!

We don't go there any more, as soon as you stop there's a hand at your window wanting money off you, and vehicle parking is usually about 2 miles away from the place you want to visit. These days we prefer Scotland, where motorhomers are welcomed.

prior to xmas went up to moray firth and lochness made really welcome ! no probs, between xmas and new year went to lleyn penninsula stayed loadsa place inc. criccieth front (between xmas and 3rd jan no parking charges whatsoever :) )no probs and peeps very helpful coastal sights and lakes as nice as anything cornwall has to offer.............so vote with ya wheels :)

Slight variation and about Devon. While I lived south I was a member of Surfers Against Sewage.
We held a demonstration on Paignton seafront with TV. and the Press present....the local paper received a lot of letters from "ordinary people" complaining about these drug crazed hippies who were destroying the legitimate holiday trade.....curiously the letters were all identical and turned out to have been "encouraged" by a local hotel association.
When being interviewed by a national newspaper, it was clear the reporter believed that true...she was surprised to find in the group of wetsuited characters, 2 serving police officers, a priest, a solicitor and several nurses.
Again, to show the "power" of the hotel industry...one of the Torquay churches had its porch taken over by two addicts, sleeping rough and injecting merrily. Despite complaints to the police of their violent behaviour and their obscene behaviour to the young girls of the playgroup, Brownies and dancing classes (exposure was common), nothing was done.
After, at last, a senior officer became involved it turned out that they had been seen in the grounds of a local up-market hotel. The manager had rung the police and the two had been immediately moved and directed to the church porch.
Are you surprised the accomodation business objects to motorhomes? The question is not "do they bring business into the area" as much as "does my business benefit from them". To a B&B owner or hotel the answer is "No".

I live in cornwall!

As a "local" I find it almost impossible to wild camp in this county and stay on cl sites of which there are hundreds. Our main problem is that over the years we have been plagued by illegal traveller sites so big granite boulders are put on any potential wild site by the landowners and the councils. As for ripping off the emmits and tourists - you try living here with the below average wages/exorbitant water charges and Tamar bridge charge when you leave the county! Still I wouldn't live anywhere else --its heaven when all the tourists go home and you can find somewhere to park!!

Aye we say the same on the Yorks coast,

We have a bridge too but ignore it, I am not sure what is a legal traveller and illegal one !!!
below average wages , it sounds like Yorks !!!...

Keep em down there lass, While ever Yorkshire coast is the hidden jewel in the crown I is happy

Generalizations

'Hi, We all have informed opinions about something, but try to avoid turning them into generalizations'.

Norms or generalizations are how most matters are decided in respect to everything in society!

Taking a straw poll here the 'generalization' of feelings here clearly indicate that such norms apply!

As to poverty in Cornwall, the minimuim wage tripled wages in the area and the low cost of living leave those in work certainly comfortable. Those who are in the local civil service ride high on the pay scale. To say it is not the case that coastal towns and villages are not dominated by the retired and 'emmits' I would state clearly that the person has no knowledge of the subject. It dominates local news and as confirmed by others here a ghosttown in winter months, is everyone else wrong!

Ask where low income families and poor live in Surrey, where very much generalizations and norms exist and are a fact of life!

In the South such generalizations and norms apply over vast areas where poor and low income families are simply shipped in as and when needed!
