Even easier to write the formulae on a little card and keep it in the sat-nav carry case until you're so used to converting that you don't need to refer to it.
The formulae are simple and are as follows:
To convert Degrees, Minutes & Seconds to Degrees, Minutes
Example: 46°9'57" = 46° and (9+(57/60))' = 46°9.950'
To convert Degrees, Minutes to Decimal Degrees
Example: 46°9.950' = 46. and (9.950/60)° = 46.1658°
To convert Degrees, Minutes & Seconds to Decimal Degrees
Example: 46°9'57" = 46. and ((9/60) + (57/3600))° = 46.1658°
To convert Decimal Degrees to Degrees, Minutes, Seconds
Example: 46.1658° = 46° and (0.1658 x 60)
= 46° and (9.948)
= 46°9' and (0.948 x 60)
= 46°9' and (56.88) - rounds up to 57
= 46°9'57"
I don't have a problem as my Sat Nav seems to accept all sorts of coordinates but I'd never remember any formula unless I was using it regularly also I'd never find the piece of paper I wrote it on after a few days
I use Streetmap - Maps and directions for the whole of Great Britain when looking for addresses, places to park etc, then I click on their "Convert to Coordinates" button at the bottom of the page.
It gives OS Map coords, GPS Coords and even local Post Codes of the point you move the Arrow to.
Nice and easy!
