Waypoint labels for Google Earth

I am currently using the last issue of wildcamping poi's/waypoints for google earth. I am so grateful for all the hard work you've put in to this that I am almost reluctant to ask you this question, especially so near to the new release, but in using the waypoints in google I find that the pushpins and more importantly their labels almost totally swamp the map, making it difficult to see a route clearly. With so many more waypoints in the impending version it is going to be even harder to see the map. Is there any way this problem can be improved? I think ideally I would like to see just small markers and no label until I actually click on "properties" so that in planning a route i can easily see if there are any wildspots near the route and then go in to find more detail on individual spots.

It may well be that I am a dumbo and could have set up the existing waypoints in a more friendly way but I am no expert and any help would be appreciated.

Kind regards,
Martin.

Hi Martin

I've just found a way to improve things ...

You can't switch the labels off (I don't believe), but you can alter the font and scaling of the labels.

If you load the KML file into Google Earth, try the following:

  • Go to Tools, Options, then select the 3D View tab (if necessary)
  • Next click the 3D Font button
  • You can now choose a font, style of font (normal, italic etc), and size of font
  • If you can, choose Arial Narrow, Normal, 12 point and click OK
  • Back at the 3D View tab note that you can choose Small, Medium or Large Labels/Icon Size
  • Try selecting the sizes and then click Apply to see the effect on the underlying map - I find Small works well for me with the above font selection
  • Adjust till you're happier with the result

Incidentally, the labels in the new release are now in upper and lowercase, rather than in capitals, which also improves legibility ...

I hope this helps.

Regards

Chris

Thank you Chris. I am going to have a go at that straight away. Looking forward to seeing the new version too.

Hi Canalsman,
Thanks for the advice, works a treat....and our thanks for all you do to make life easier!

I get pushpins only (without description). Am I a genius then? :D

If I can figure out why, I will charge £10 a time to let members in on it. :D

Do you really really really wish me to answer that ?

To be helpful....click on "wild camping" folder, "waypoints", look for "properties", "Style/colour/" "Labels", "opacity" choose "0%".
Choose "apply" to all

POI on iphone

I'm running google earth on my iPhone and would like to use the poi files. Is this possible does anyone know.

Chris, a massive thank-you from me, and I'm sure many others, for all the work you have put into this.

Cor, that's almost worth 10 squid of anyones money! Seriously, Thank you very much. Canalsman's suggestion certainly helped but to be able to turn them off altogether is brilliant. I can just click on the pushpins now and get a popout label with the same info!

This may be a double post!

Amazing what we can do up here now we have this new fangled thing called "electricity"....my pleasure!
