We are planning to visit one or other of the above but would like to hear of anyone's experiences of either if you have been?

Cheers

We did Germany many years ago (before the van) in a sports car and we visited Trier it is a town with a lot of Roman history and I found it very good to visit but that was 20 years ago.

Trier is lovely, but I’ve never been to Cochem so can’t really advise.

Are you talking one day, or longer?
Cochem is a nice little town, we spent a day in the town, then a day cycling along river. Struggling to remember much about Trier apart from cycling along river.

Visited Cochem about six years ago, enjoyed our visit. Stayed on a smallish site about a mile away right on the river,
pleasant area overall.
Not been to Trier.

We'll have a couple of nights there so we can bimble into town for the day...or part of it at least.

Cochem for staying in. There is more to see in Trier, a fair bit more as far as touristy sightseeing stuff, but I’d prefer Cochem for staying in. More than enough to do with the castle and chair lift thingy for a day or two, plenty of coffee shops etc, will be busy on weekend if weather is good.

Stellplatz is probably less than 600 M away from town centre, it’s nothing special, just a bit of space along the road a some dedicated spaces in a car park. Campsite is nice enough, probably about 1.5/2 km walk on opposite side of the river, pleasant enough walk.

We visited Trier a few years ago mainly to see the
PORTA NIGRA a roman gateway in very condition.
Cannot remember much else about the town.

Dezi

More than enough to do with the castle
Was surprised the guide didn't dress up when she was on Portillo's program.

We've been to both Trier and Cochem, Trier has lots of Roman history, personally we prefer Cochem it's smaller but we like it, there is a stelleplatz near the river at Cochem which is also the coach parking area so need to be there early to get a parking space.

Both worth a visit Graham, the Porta Negro in Trier really is testament to the might of the Roman empire north of the Alps, very impressive.

If you do both follow the Mosel between the two (especially if you like wine).

Yes, i think it's worth visiting both too, if time allows.

Neumagen-Dhron, is a very sweet village between the two. Nice stellplatz too, right on the river.

If you are in that area, Bernkastel-Kües is worth a visit. We stayed on a privately owned stellplatz on a vineyard (Studert-Prüm), take a short walk upstream to take the boat down to Bernkastel-Kües itself.
