Hi,

We are thinking of visiting the cirque de Gavarnie on our September / Autumn trip. 42.704255, -0.008218

Its been a few years since we were last there and if I don't go before the dry rot sets in now then - who knows.

Anybody been recently and is the 3 mile trek to get there from the parking just as uphill, boulder strewn and treacherous, as it always was.

it'll be comforting to find some things have a permanency about them in this ever changing World.

We were there last September. Been a few times now although I am unable to do the walk anymore due to Arthritis Mrs D did it and it was fine. Hard work in places. She also did the one up the top of the Col du Tentes which is at the top of the road above the Aire out of the village. If you havent done that one its a spectacular drive up and back down again. You can walk from the car park into Spain at about 7500ft.

Both the bottom car park and the big Aire 1km up the hill are all Pay and display now. Loads of space up top when we were there last September though. One of my favourite places on the planet.

We was there last September as well and kept company all night by the local Pottok, one of which had a good chew on my watering can :mad2:

Thanks for the replies lads.

We have not visited the Col du Tentes and will definitely go and have a look Barry, but as I am a long way on the wrong side of 70, it might just be look.

Cirque

We were there Sept 2017, the walk to the Cirque didn’t seem too challenging, not half as bad as some of the walks we’ve done in the Alps recently. Missed out on the Col du Tentes, which gives us an excuse to go back some day! I too am the wrong side of 70 so I guess we hadn’t leave it too long.

Well the Col de Tentes is a fairly easy ride up in the van although I always use the scooter but its fine for a van. Some good stopping places half way up on a plateau where you can watch the Marmots. Go too early in the spring and the road is a ski run though.

I forgot there is also the Cirque de Troumouse and nearby Cirque de Estaube. Cracking wild spot at the bottom of Troumouse. Again only used the bike to get up it but motorhomes do go up. Its a toll road but its not much. Your actually quote high at the top of Troumouse and look down on a fair bit of the cirque as well as up. Relatively easy walking at both to get some views. Cirque de Estaube is a much shorter but dodgier road and I only know one guy who has took a motorhome up there but he is a Fruitcake. Doable with care but not much parking at the top and quite a hike to the cirque. I forgot I filmed them all last September on a helmet cam. Soz about the music.

Great videos (and music) Barry. Gavarnie is on my must visit list.

The next time I Say ""I am going to walk the cirque" just tell me to shuddup and have another beer.

Did it this morning and am totally knackered.

Still, on the bright side,it's steak tonight with a glass or three of Merlot and a bottle of my bestest beer Fischer.

Dezi.

Its further away than it looks innit! :D

Next time do what I do and let your other half do it while you stop at the bar at the beginning of the walk and patiently wait.
