Children's bed ideas?

We have a horsebox (non-Luton type) and need to create a bed area for our little-one. I remember years ago when camping in my parents old Sprite caravan that us kids slept on a hammock type bed which rolled away from the wall, so you were basically suspended on a canvas type material between two round long battons. The batton furthest away would slot into a holder when in use.

I was thinking about doing the same thing, using perhaps two aluminium scaffold poles and two cup type holders. The width across the 'divide' is about 2.2m.

Has anyone done anything similar, or have any other ideas how we can create a bed area that suspends above the living area?

I also thought about a piece of say 18mm plywood (2400mmx1200mm) across the width of box, supported by batten/supports either side with perhaps a central support? I didn't really want to make the box top-heavy though, especially having experienced driving down the M1 yesterday in gale-force winds. jeepers :-o

Hi I used to have the same in my Bedford years ago. across the width of the van above the drivers seats. works great. But dont think you need the heavy scaffold poles. Mine were 35mm. In fact I have just got rid of the cup fittings to a bloke for his Bongo. If I were to do something similar today i WOULD USE SQUARE BOX TUBE AS IT WOULD BE EASIER TO MANUFACTURE THE CUPS AND SQUARE TUBES ARE EASIER TO STORE. Sorry for shouting. One day I will find the caps lock.:mad2:
Something else you might consider if you have the room is a bed made from tube and canvas and hinged to the van side. We used to do this in the army three tonners. It then just fold up out of the way with the bedding on it.
When you've done post it on here so that others can see and maybe use the idea.

we fitted molly's bed along one side in our dodge, got one of those extending beds with cushion inserts rekon on 5 more years before a rethink! will put a link to pics

That's a good idea D2. If going for the fold up type (prefer the sound of that...as you say no messing around with bedding) would you use aluminium or steel tubing? She probably doesn't weigh more than a knat, but just want to make sure its strong enough if she's leaping around up there. Just wondering if I could get away with buying a normal camp bed and doing something with that....but not long enough to reach across the width for support at each short end, I would hazard a guess.

Thanks for posting your pics thejoys, but I don't think I could make it out. Could you explain a little more? Where d'u put the horses ;))

very good idea. just asked OH who's ex-army and he thinks they may well be long enough to reach across the width of the truck. off to google...

I'm now thinking these look like an instrument of torture and wondering how a 4 year old will cope with lying still. We might be better off with a fold-up bunk bed type (board spanning the width) which may give her a bit of room to play up there and at least we can line it with a thin mattress and cargo net arrangement to stop her falling out. Shame it's much heavier than the stretcher idea though.

i put the wrong link up, trying to find some more pics, no horses we race dragbikes, just been to north weald, essex way, one bike fits in the back under the double bed, other bike on a trailer, we can sleep 8 in the goddess at a push, lots of storage is the key, will find a pic of the bed an put it up.
