Chelmsford Council is obviously not interested in Motorhome visitors

We want to visit the Essex Record Office in Chelmsford so I emailed the parking services dept. and said that I could not see any car parks which did not have a height barrier, even the park & ride.
the reply I have just got is

Good Morning,
Thank you for contacting us.
Due to height barriers in all our City Centre Car Parks and Park and Ride sites, you will be unable to use any of our Car Parks.
Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused.
Many Thanks,
Dan Woska

Parking Services Income Officer

A short walk away I can see Chelmer Village Retail Park which does not seem to have any parking restrictions and no height barriers, only a sign "Customers Only", has anyone parked here for the day without any problems
Thanks

I would write or phone the management of Chelmer Village Retail Park and throw yourself at their mercy.
You could explain the reason for your visit to Chelmsford and offer to pay for your stay. Failing that, there is Tesco’s etc or you could park on Winsford Way, outside Royal Mail Sorting Office, and call a cab.

I occasionally have to visit Chelmsford, sometimes taking my van 25ft 6.6t. always use the aforementioned Chelmsford
Village Retail Park public carpark. No height barriers, park furthest spot from the entry somewhere near Halfrauds (I'm shopping there of course!). About a kilometre walk from Essex Records Office. Weekdays best, weekends it's heaving.

I used to visit an office in Chelmsford when I was working and used the Chelmer Village Retail Park a few times without issue but can't guarantee that it is still OK although last visit was a few months ago.

Thanks for the replies, I don't think it will be a problem parking at the Retail Park, if they were bothered i'm sure they would have signs up and probably couldn't do anything legally as there are no warning notices.
Like daygoboy says I could always buy a little something in Halfords and then I will be a customer

One such carpark I know

In Maidenhead.
Has warning notices alerting "parkers" they can only park whilst shopping in the relevant shops.
I have winged it a few times..
BUT I am more cautious in my old age and unwilling to forkout £75 or £100

If the warning notices are absent or not as specific you can simply buy what ever in Halfords

There is also a lack of wild camping spots in that area as well, except for a couple of laybys which are immediately beside the road and not sheltered by trees, just right for the "Beep Beep" idiots driving by, probably have to find a camp site while visiting there

I live in Chelmsford (sorry not enough room to park on my drive) and have been fined my camera in a couple of retail parks there. I don’t think the retail park you mention has cameras but could have changed. Parking a issue in Chelmsford and they are tightening up. I thought the Baddow road car park, close to the record office, didn’t have height barriers but that might have changed. There are back streets a walk away from the record office that don’t have parking restrictions.

No problem parking in the retail park, done it many times.

If you’re worried, you can park in Writtle & get the bus.

Or park in the B&M car park, you’re allowed 2.5 hours.

Make sure you don’t go over, I got done, they’ve got cameras.

I’ve stayed in the sports & leisure centre car park at Writtle in the past.

Sometimes they lock the gates at night, but that’s OK, it keeps the yobbos out.

I’ve also stayed in the old Ongar Road which is a cul-de-sac since they built the bypass.

Very quiet, the only traffic is to the houses there

Although 3km from Chelmsford Records Office, it may be worth knowing of the
BP Boreham Services, Junction 19 just off the A12, provides a mandatory 2 hours free parking,
& overnight allowed, I think it was a £8 charge when I stayed a few years ago. A bloke
wandered around attempting to take payment from London area/M25 irate/harassed truckies,
looked so frightened he only tapped a couple of doors before disappearing, so gratis for us!
Reasonable cycle lanes to Chelmsford centre, plus busses.

Thanks for that info, it looks the best bet for overnighting and getting a bus into Chelmsford
