... after having new tyres fitted!

I've just had two new tyres fitted and after I got home I noticed both alloys had been damaged.

A circumferential score to the surface, penetrating the lacquer, around an inch in from the edge of the rim was clearly evident.

I returned to the fitters the next day, not at all pleased, and they owned up thankfully.

It seems that with some wheels they have to insert a spacer to stand the wheel off from the rotating turntable when levering the old tyre off, or the new tyre onto, the wheel.

If the wheel doesn't sit squarely on the spacers damage can occur as it did with both my wheels.

Life is never simple, lots of things going on at the moment ... The 'van is going to spend a couple of days at the fitters for the tyres to be removed, the wheels to be fully refurbished, and the tyres refitted.

Bother blow !!!

you noticed it quickly - you did not have a blow out or other tyre-related incident - your tyre fitters admitted responsibility and are fixing it - PHEW - good result i would say

Good they admitted it straight off though and the wheel refers are as good as new wheels, they usually have mobile guys that will come and do them, can come to your home if you are lucky enough to live close to one but a couple of days is free parking

Good to hear they are repairing them, it’s urprising they make these mistakes as that’s what they do all day long.

Rims get marked here all the time with the taking of tyres,cannot be helped is all they say.

More to it than that - apart from checking for fitting damage described BEFORE leaving the shop, what about whether they have torqued the nuts up correctly AND not over tightened them. Clean dry threads if that is what is specified. Use a torque wrench set at correct torque. Don't let them tighten with a rattle gun.
AND tyre pressures too. Otherwise the pressures can be plus or minus 20 psi from the specified value (that you have to give them)

It is not ideal that they had to be confronted before they admitted they damaged them though
When I take wheels in to have tyres fitted, I tell them upfront they are perfect and they must remain that way (in a friendly way of course ). Most decent tyre places have touchless systems where no tool touches the wheel, just the tyre and the chance of damage is very very slight then.

I've repaired a couple of wheels where the tyre shop have marked the rim. One guy tried it on a bit trying to get a full refurb after one slight nick. Tyre shop told me to just fix the one nick and leave all the other marks on the wheel alone

We were in a small aire/ Campsite in Cassino the other day. German van drives out,
2 mins later drives back in. They heard strange noises from back of van. Call out guy comes - eventually turns out wheel nuts loose. Not sure how that happens or whether the Italian roads would have an impact but If had a quick check of mine!

Fit your own tyres. At least you know who to blame when you
nick the rims.
But will the recycling centre take the old carcasses,and will
somebody dynamically balance the things, so perhaps not
for some.
