Cheap or free sites

Have just returned from a four week European trip and found numerous cheap or even better, free. In Holland we stayed 2 nights at Wijhe, right by the Issel river, hot food 50 feet away. A five minute walk to the supermarket, 5 Euro per night, water, toilet, you need a key from the man who maintains the area.
We were on route for Luxembourg and got delayed, had camped at Arlon last year and decided to go there again, couldn't find it. Found a closed down Intermarche with a large quiet car park, 200 yards from a Lidl.
Through Luxembourg southwards into France. Great site at Stenay, next to the canal, toilets, showers and electric for 6 Euro, big site, supermarket 5 minutes away.
Ten miles on is Dun Sur Meuse, sign says Port de Plaisance, next to the canal. There is a shower, toilets and washing machine. The fee is collected at around 7.00 pm. The facilties are always open 3 Euro and if you are honest and pay 7 Euro you can use them. 7 Euro also includes electric. You also get cards and a list of local shops etc that will give discount, free drinks on presentation. Shops are 5 minutes away.
Next stop was Commercy, a new facility was nearing completion, by the canal and 100 yards from an Aldi. Electric, water and I think toilets and shower. It was only open for boats; but know will be open for motorhomes. Didn't think to enquire the price, very low or free I would think.
Onto Bar Le Duc, there is camping at the Mediatheque just as you come into town from Commercy. However if you pass that on the right and take a left over the bridge and immediately left, there is a place for 6 motorhomes, water and waste emptying. There are showers and toilets, but you have to pay 20 Euro deposit for the key. It is free, only boats pay. A 5 minute walk takes you into a very interesting town, 15 minutes takes you to the old renaissance part of town. Downside is, it's next to the station.
On the road to Cambrai you come to Le Cateau Cambresis, there is a 5 bay motorhome stop, water and waste, elecricity, only 4 sockets. 5 minute walk to the shops, it's free.
We did stop at several other cheap sites, have forgotten the names. We had 10 nights that were cheap or free, total cost was 30 Euro.
The most we paid was 20.50 Euro in Holland.
Hope this info is of help.:)

Thanks for info.
Thinking of the Mosel region for Sept/Oct.
Depending on weather.

....in 3.5 years of Motorhoming we have spent 350 nights without paying a euro in France, Spain, Italy Germany and Belgium. We have also managed without paying for water and even benefited from free electricity. How we wish we could say the same about the UK.

Galway; don't THINK about the Mosel, just GO and enjoy . This is one of the most beautifull and also MH-friendly area's in Germany. Look at the thread 'Moselvalley'. Almost every village/town has something to offer for MH's.
Nice scenery, nice walking, nice biking, friendly people, and ... good white wine (also don't underestimate the red wine: 'Dornfelder', little known but oh so good :)
Don't bother about the weather: the Moselvalley enjoys a fairly sunny (sometimes) microclimate

thanks for sharing, thats what this site is all about.

Hi Ian,
Being very new to this, could you please tell me where you stopped.
It sounds as though you have got it realy sorted.

Hi Wilbury
The list is a rather untidy and long one with a fair number of repeats. One day I will tidy it up and blog our travels!!

However some general pointers:
1. Unless well out in the sticks don't stay more than a couple of days: also dont spread out and make camp! By all means roll out the awning and use table and chairs but put them away at night.
2. Use the aires lists of which can be found on line; also some lists include place where you can park. Remember that conditions do change so no list is 100%.
3. Lakes, rivers and canals offer good potential
4. Villages and smaller towns offer good parking sometimes by the church: also cemeteries (also often a good source of water!)
5. Forests and woods. Often a short drive into a wood on a route forestiere yields dividends.
6. The med coast is bad especially in the summer
7. The UK is not easy but we have managed quite a few pleasant nights thanks in part to postings on sites such as this.
8. Industrial estates can offer parking at weekends.
9. Start looking for a parking mid afternoon then if your first choice doesnt work out then you can look for another.
10. On the continent many villages have a tap that can be used to fill up -you may have to use a container to fill the tank.

For safety I suggest staying away from the busier motorway aires and larger towns: also some places where lots of motorhomes and lorries congregate -they offer easy pickings. Be alert often you get a sense if the area is generally safe.

Not a bad idea Galway heading for the Mosel in Sept/Okt. If you are around the Luxembourg area heading towards Trier. Cross over the border to Germany at Luxembourg and drive along this road that runs parallel with the Mosel. There are a lot of Camp sites along this stretch. Sorry, cannot help with the prices. It is really beautiful. Look for a small village called Wasserbillig. There is a great site, if you want to stroll along the wine country, or ride bikes to go sight seeing.

Hi the best time to go to the Mosel is in September / October thats when they pick the Grapes and the wine flows but stay clear of the new wine,( its still cloudy and bubles away and you drink it ) saying that Jane had 3lts and it goes straight though you, the Germans love it they drink it for 12 weeks day and night. All the way along the mosel are more Stelplatz and campsites than anywhere else you go, in between 3 and 10 euros a night and a lot of towns are closed off for the Wine Festivals and you will see them all ump pa pa and you really get in the sway of it. And the other thing is the cobb nuts and walnuts are falling off the trees and they are everywhere so you will be loading up for Christmas! Enjoy. Its a great place for bicylces you can go for miles and its flat. I must agree with Nedrawnep about the aire at Stenay it is a really nice one, the other one mentioned at Le Cateau Cambresis we have stayed many times but a few weeks ago it was invaded by thugs and they smashed the vans up in the night, but I dont think it will put us off just make us more alert, its a lovely spot next to the river and its Free, the best thing in Holland is to get the ACSI book all site fee's are 10 to 14 euros its worth having. Thanks Bob.:D
