Oct 2009 we bought our camper (Fair Phyllis) from a trusted friend. Basic home conversion VW T4 so we could try out the camper life. After a weekend trial we installed a swivel seat and a leisure battery and we bought a portable induction electric hob . Our only gas appliance was a 2 burner + grill running off camping gaz. Otherwise known as liquid gold methinks!
Then we set out to do Camino by camper. Following the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain by diesel feet! (Well we do have nearly 140 years of lifetime experience between us).
We were amazed to discover that the hob will even work off 3 amps. That's all the leccy we had somewhere in northern Spain and if we kept it at 4 or below it still worked. Slowly, I grant you but we were not in a hurry. I started making a giant mess of pottage (spanish stew) on the gas and then let it simmer on the induction. It doubles up as our BBQ. No mess and all you need is an extension lead from the van and you can sit outside in the sun to cook. It works by electro magnetism and doesn't actually get hot. Ours cost less than £50 and they appear in Lidl from time to time quite a bit cheaper. Size is roughly a foot square.
There is one downside – well one miracle at a time please – and that is - it only works on certain pans. (Not aluminium) We have a set of gelert stacking camping pans with copper bottoms which work fine with it and we bought one big induction pan with lid and one induction frying pan. These are expensive but quality gear and I am still using them.
I was inspired to write this having read the “few tips for your french trip” by Sky - Well done Sky!
I must add thanks for this site – it is so informative and helpful and friendly. Happy camping everyone!

PS I am sure this would probably work off an inverter but that is far too technical for me!

Induction hob............. those magic words. We have been using one for several years now and love them, they take up little room and work on next to nothing brilliant bit of kit. We also have a full sized one in the kitchen at home and a double one in the kitchen in france they are so good

same here. We had a single one from Lidl as an emergeny hob when we re-fitted the kitchen. It worked so well that we decided to ditch the gas hob at home and buy an induction one.
Only downside is the limitation of suitable cookware. But I have seen somewhere a metal plate you can use on the induction hob with normal pans on top. Not ideal as you are left with a boiling hot plate on your hob.

Didn't realise that they run on so little power, so the single one will now move to the Motorhome! Great Tip!

We've beenn thinking of an induction hob for some time now but I thought they operated on higher power than that. Thanks - we'll be down to Lidl at the next available opportunity! :)
