Hi .. wonder if someone out there can help .. we've recently bought a camper and found out the carver water heating system doesn't work when we put it on gas works fine on 24v water heats up great ..any advice out there or pointers on what the problem could be would be very much appreciated .. thank you Lisa and Jamie

hi there and welcome, have you taken the cover off outside on the vent ?

Hi .. and thank you for the welcome :) .. there is no cover on there .. found it a bit wierd as the cooker works and the fridge works on gas all the gas taps are on .. lisa and jamie

Hi Lisa,
This happened to me on my Sundance due to the gas jets being corroded, i put it down to the dreaded jet spray, a new complete unit cost £100 fitted. Cant understand why you have no vent from outside though

woohoo we got hot water, we changed the burner under the vent outside the van as it looked like that wasn't working, no clicking nothing .. put new one in heard it clicking then stop and it still wouldn't light ... checked the gas pipes going into the burner and there was the problem .. the pipe was blocked it had what looks sort of like limescale dust type stuff (been told that orange gas bottles often leave a residue which can build up) .. i hope if anyone else has a problem then this may be of help

now to find where the air is being sucked in the pipes so i don't get the taps spluttering lol

If your taps are spluttering try filling your water tank. Air gets in when the water level gets too low, then you have to bleed it out by just running the taps until the water flow is smooth and it stops spitting at you. Depending on how much air is in your system depends on how bad it spits and how wet you get!!!

By the way, as you've only recently bought your camper check that the water tank drain tap is closed, or all the water you put in will just drain out on to the floor!!! :D

hi Randonneur

thank you for your input on our problem:)

we think air is getting in between the water tank and the pump just a bit of a pain to get at :(.. when we turn the tap off and put our head in the cupboard under seat we can hear a sort of air sucking bubble type sound lol

we have filled the tank a couple of times and drained it .. the tap we have is a mixer spray type so yes we do get wet now and then (jamie does mostly)

between jamie, myself and the parents we have had loads of campers from the commer back in the 70's .. suprising how they've all changed over the years tho:eek::eek:

Hi Lisa, If all your connections and pipes seem watertight with no visible sign of leakage then it may be your water heater leaking. If it's a Carver Cascade type then check that the sealing washer on the big drain bung under the outside cover is not perished or has scale or dirt from inside the tank stopping it from seating properly. Also check the back of the unit inside the van is dry. These have a long tie rod going from the heater body right through the tank which is then held on with a nut and washer, underneath which, is a small rubber washer. These washers get deformed and perished with age and water then leaks out when the system is under pressure when the pump is on, but you can sometimes hear air being sucked back in when the pump pressure is off!!

You can get washer repair kits from Ebay or caravan accessory shops.

I don't know what van you have or what water system layout you have, but these are my experiences from being in a similar situation with my own van.

Hope this helps, regards, Dave. :)
