Carminat TomTom Free Map

This appeared on the satnav screen of my Trafic van yesterday.



Can it possibly be true and, if it is, I doubt I can log into TomTom Home without any information – no registration details or passwords?

Some months ago a message popped up asking if I wanted free map upgrades. The first time the message came and went too quickly to do anything as I was driving. It re-appeared again a while later but I can’t remember what it advised me to do.

The van is 2012 Trafic with approaching 53k miles on the clock.

I rather like the Carminat but also have a Garmin bought a couple of years ago. The Garmin has lifetime maps and traffic but the Carminat map is out of date. I was recently surprised to see my car "symbolically" driving across a field where a new bypass had been built.

You can register with TomTom easily enough then remove the sd card and insert it into the card reader on your PC, open tomtom home and it will show you any updates available, this should be done on a regular basis to keep it up to date, you don't have to give any credit card details so no worry of it costing anything

You can register with TomTom easily enough ..... you don't have to give any credit card details so no worry of it costing anything

Thanks for advice, I assumed TomTom would not let me register without the original sign in details but you were right and I am now "associated" with the device in my van. Some system updates were installed but no free maps. They kindly offered me a new map of UK and Ireland for £40.
I was more worried that they might wipe some data and make it less useful but nothing untoward happened. The van was registered early 2012 and the TomTom App was dated 28/1/2011, now updated to 26.6.2014. I guess map is from the same era.

Where was that?, a new road in England unbelievable!

Unbelievable because nobody knows where it is according to the Daily Mail:

"New £35million bypass built after 60-year battle becomes the road with no traffic because it doesn't appear on sat navs"
A43 Corby bypass is a road without traffic as it doesn't appear on sat navs | Daily Mail Online

At least the TomTom has a good excuse as the map predates the new link by over two years

If there are as few new roads in England as you suggest I will save my £40.

Can always fire up the Garmin if I get lost

You don't need new maps but put the SD card in your PC and sign in to tomtom home regularly, it will keep it running better with system updates

If it doesn't have a card you can still connect the unit to your PC and update with TomTom home or if it is a later one you have to use mydrive connect

They kindly offered me a new map of UK and Ireland for £40.

"Kindly" was definitely tongue in cheek I wonder why there is no emoticon holding a placard reading "Joke" for the benefit of the less cynical.
If I need the latest map I hope it will be on the Garmin as I recently updated that. Must update Maps.me on the Galaxy tab too although what I would really like is topographic maps.

When the van is progressed enough to use I will have a look at the OS Maps app for the tablet.

Are there similar topographic map apps for Parts of Europe?

For France have a look at:

https://www.geoportail.gouv.fr

There's an app available for free. IGN is the French equivalent of the OS.

This is an useful resource for maps elsewhere in Europe:

IGN Map of Spain - SWC

OS maps are available free using the app Back Country Navigator.

You will need an internet connection to access the mapping though generally you can store a small area on the device for use whilst exploring.
