Just posted info on the Dumfriesshire thread but thought should mention it here so everyone knows...
Following a mass invasion by a dozen or more gypsy vans a few weeks ago, No Overnight Parking signs have gone up at Caerlaverock (NY009654) which was a favourite spot for many of us:(

Ain't it sad how the few can spoil it for the many?

Everyone might want to get used to this. :(

I have recently learnt that Its not just motorhome users that have and use canalsmans POI data.(I was talking to a scrap collector yesterday and he told me where I could stay in my camper!!)

he even offered to me the files for a price...:(.

Quote "Its far easier and cheaper for us to use google earth to find places to camp than drive around looking for somewhere to stay :D"..

So many of our/your favourite spots will become encampments,

Makes you think that issuing a comprehensive list availkable to everyone for £15 may not be benificial after all .:eek:

Maybe time for a rethink ! , But maybe its too late ..

This is what I was on about a while back and some people took exception to it
I still say that the wealth "Wildcamping" is the POIs provdied by Canalsman. The other posts that have been placed over the years by contributers are the other

The people who will abuse them and take advantage will, in the main, be people who will not part with £15

I can imagine how Canalsman must feel knowing that some piece of **** was willing to take money for his hard work. The same thing happened with another man who went to all the trouble to list all the Caravan Clubs and the Camping & Caravan Club sites on Autoroute: He4 found them being offered on Ebay
He has now withdrawn them from the sites where they were posted and is a bitter but wiser man

Firstly - Chris (Canalsman) Has don an amazing job collating all the data/information and is a major asset to the members of the forum , and should be acknowleged.

Unfortunatly "Baloothebear" I must have missed your previous post - Woops...

My point , was "Some Travellers" now have a copy of the POI File.

"COMING TO A PLACE NEAR YOU" :D:D you never know...

Maybe its time for a rethink on how and to who the poi file is distributed to :(

At first it appears benificial,BUT it may cause problems for dedicated "Wilders" down the line by :-

1. Travelers

2. Local Authorties - Would know where the sites used frequently are
NO OVERNIGHT PARKING SIGNS

3. The Unsavory groups - You know the types."SAGART" met them !!! last week.

I think there is a possibility it will be on Flebay soon !!!!,

Unfortunatly someone will exploit it !! - hmmm HOLIDAY FUNDS !!

vvv.eebay.cook/ Canalsmanscampingdata/poi/myholidayfund..........

JUST JOKING !!!! ;)

There's no simple answer to the problem.

The idea behind making the information available to site supporters only was to make this collated data less accessible, and to rely on the majority not to distribute the files.

Inevitably there will be some who try to take advantage.

It's an eternal and insoluble problem with anything that's stored digitally - music and dvd's for example.

Google Streetview is a major contributor to the problem too.

Now anyone with a computer and some time on their hands can easily find spots to stop. They don't need the information that I've compiled - although that obviously makes it easier.

So the less desirable elements will tend to make their presence felt even more, and will have a greater impact.

Those of us who use places responsibly shouldn't have to suffer as a result.

We should encourage/persuade/cajole the authorities to recognise that we have every right to stop at suitable places for a single night, and that those who abuse these places do not have that right.

This seems to me to be something that central government needs to address, perhaps by giving local authorities the right to licence sites, and by giving the police powers to enforce.

lol:D there is any wonder most people that wildcamp (camp site dodgers )laugh in your face when you mention this site, organise, legalise, enforce will it then be wildcamping, like i have said before 90% of members on here don't even wild camp:eek: thats why thy are willing to post sites they pass and think suitable on open forum :mad:i have spent hours on here looking at differant areas and reading old threads about stopping places and planning our weekends ,not just gone to a pin stuck in a map then complained about the place ****

This is the point that I was making here - http://www.wildcamping.co.uk/forums/general-chat/10149-restricted-viewing.html

Quite how "canalsman" must feel hearing that his work is being offered for sale already I couldn't imagine. I know that when JH, my friend, had his POIs turn up on EBay that he was devastated that people could be so blatant with their theft

Surely this is one reason for the file only being available to site supporters, to reduce the chance of this happening.

It was only a few weeks or so ago that any tom dick or harriette could come along, get the file and then clear off. I know that I had just joined and was a free member when I first got the file.

But as Chris says, anything digitally available is subject to piracy, which is what it is. I sell downloadable scripts, and the number of emails I get asking for help on a script from people who have not purchased from me is horrendous.

A problem, no doubt. It is a pity about Carlaverock - we spent a night there earlier in the year. Three vans that night - did not speak to the others, so don't know who they were or where they came from.

However, in the North of Scotland - where a lot of visitors come in the summer - there are so many places (I have more to post when I get a moment) and even if every one of them had a no overnight sign - who would be policing it? This has been discussed before. The "travellers" are about. We passed an encampment near Invergarry last week, but here at least wild motorhomers vastly outnumber tinks.

IMHO "wilding" as most of us know it will remain available here. If we respect the spaces, do not gather in any number, and move on each night (or spend no more than a couple of nights in one place). And there are, of course, private places like Brin where there are no problems (yet!).

Can we encourage other small businesses to offer overnight parking free of charge, especially in the less remote areas. Many farm shops for example have car parks - do you know one that might be interested?

In conversation with Telstar the other day we decided that there must be people with space - a car park, a field or something, but perhaps they do not know that we would like to wild there.

Should we consider an informal "France Passion" type system - to be added to your POIs, Canalsman?

It does not provide an answer to the problem, but in the long term it may help.

i supported this site for what it offered eg tech help/chat not for the sites available!!!! i have however asked individuals for info of places they have spoke about!!!! as for a disc being made available on ebay lol with the aggro thats taken/takin' place on here to pay for the very same thing, i can't see peeps paying for it!!

one thing that keeps tinkers/gypsies/diddycoys in a particular place is easy cash in the hand and sub-standardwork, with a waste site by the side of them!!!!! if everyone stopped using their 'services' that would be one problem gone.

the councils seeing these 'wildspots' available would put signs up!!!! doubt it!!!! i reckon they put em up where the area is abused or complaints are made!

there will always be spots to stay!!

Great idea ...

How, though, do we go about finding suitable places?

And are there any legal issues?

The pub stopover scheme should be expanded since the pubs can only gain.

If everyone asked their local about this, that would get us a good few more I think. But I'd hesitate to put them on 'open view' ...

I think there are one or two legal issues (hence the "(yet)" in my previous post!) Also it may be different in England & Wales - I'm not sure, though someone will.

Hopefully there will be more posts on the subject and I'll get back to it at the end of the week.

Well yes, there are legal issues, mainly the fact that a site licence and planning permission is required (subject to a few exemptions) for any site that permits caravans or motorhomes to stay 'for the purpose of human habitation'.

The Practical Motorhome magazine's Nightstop Scheme takes advantage of one such exemption by getting their sites licenced for 5 motorhomes by the Motor Caravanners Club, in the same way that CL and CS sites are licenced. They want more suggestions and are currently running a draw, with a £50 prize, for anyone suggesting new sites.
