Caravan Levellers

Does anyone use caravan levellers.

When I had a caravan, I used to use them occasionally, but in 12,000 in a motorhome they are still untouched in their bags.

The reason I am raising it is that that I have long scandinavian trip coming up (in about three days) and I have limited external storage (Bessecarr E625) and I thinking of taking a large watering can to make it easier to get water. But if I do that, the levellers stay at home.

I think I have made my decision, but does anyone have any thoughts?

I used mine for the first time last week. Up til then I thought they were a waste of space. My rule of thumb for being level is that my wine stays in the glass and that I don't roll out of bed.

and dont take a water can use a folding one available from any camp shop. I use a camp shower bag which holds 5 gallons. This has also been used to heat water at times as it is one of those black things that you lay in the sun. But the bonus is that it rolls up small to stow away and is easy to fill from most taps even from a stream.

we carried our's for years and never used them collecting dust in shed now ,wouldn't be without our watering can though :lol-053:
have you got your bread trays ?:p

My fridge won't work if the vans not level. So if needs be i'll take out the passenger seat to carry them. Hmmm there's an idea!

i never use them or blocks wood etc . it gives the idea you are camping .hard to say you are just parked if on blocks .
mind its good fun watching others get level . cant be bothered with it myself . if its really that unlevel park somewhere else.

Good point about the parking v. camping.

Ack, I think I will leave the things at home. And it is too late...just bought a 13l watering can!

Leveling blocks

My washing up water won't run away if the van slopes down at the front, maybe I better stop washing up and then I can chuck the leveling blocks,

it may seem daft but if we use the spanish explanation about parking versus camping its a start . leave /put nothing outside if wild parking(note not camping). we have to start somewhere, there definition is or as been accepted i believe by the who,s who in the eu rules. their definitions make good sense to me . i think its a good staff to lean on and maybe a good stick to hit the authorities with on occasions.half inch of water in a sink is worth not using yellow i,m camping signs surely.

Use ramps sometimes, mainly if we are stopping somewhere for more than a couple of nights & only then if we are noticeably not level. Also take a 11 litre watering can & a hose. Space for that sort of stuff isn't too much of a problem as we have a garage. Our problem is deciding whether to take the motorcycle or 2 electric bikes as we can't get them all in.

I have the space to carry six ramps (twin rear wheels) and a pair of chocks. I have only had to use the chocks in anger at the Aire in Avranches. This has such a slope on it that I had to use three ramps together under the Front wheels to get a slope in the van than was still not acceptable, (tow bar almost touching the ground at the rear). This is the only place I have felt the need for ramps most other places I have got level with a bit of careful manoeuvring. I used one on each wheel in Spain this winter just to stop the van rolling as I was parked for months with the handbrake off. The ones at the front sloped from the front of the van under the wheel, the ones at the rear sloped from the rear of the van under the wheels. The van was not standing on the ramps.

I have not bothered with the corner steadies either. However Joan now insists that we put them down when parked for a while. I must admit it takes some of the rocking motion out of the van when moving about inside. If wild parking I would not put anything outside.

We carry a flat hose in a cassette, a 10 litre watering can and 3 x 15 litre fold flat water containers.

just a quick note . if you are going to spain it is a requirement to use wedges or chocks on a steepish slope when parking. no resting wheel against kerb or using stones . .
we actually think of taking my old black n decker lightweight lawn mower .when we are away for months there are a few places it ould be nice to cut the grass around where we are just to make it nicer. getting senile i think. soon be white plastic chain fencing and plastic flowers like the french in morocco. they take green grocer grass to give the idea its green ha ha . really honest.

We use ramps if stopping on an official site, it stops the malteasers from rolling under a unit if you miss your mouth when trying to catch it!!

But if wilding never use them, if we need to drive off in a hurry, I don't want to leave them behind, cause I've paid for them and I'm not letting anyone else have them!!

Good ideas about collapsible watering cans/containers, tried some cheaper containers but always leaked after a short period.

Water is more important than being level - you can always move to another spot - but what about taking a bucket rather than a watering can and storing the levellers inside the bucket? Lateral thinking. Have a great trip.

I am coming round to your way of thinking, but when I posted, I genuinely hadn't thought about the parking/camping argument. Which is stupid, because I have thought about when I have been out and about.

Anyway, it is good to air these things. :p

So...how do you get the water from the cans into the tanks? Or don't you?

We can fit one wedge/ramp between the gas bottles, which also holds them in place better, as there's ofter just one corner that needs raising (like others have said nice to fully empty the sink).

I now have a funnel with a flexi spout for filling the van, I have drilled a hole in the side of it and fitted a sucker so it holds it to the side of the van so I can fill up via a 5ltr water bottle single handed! Plus a curly hose with screw on tap connector on one end and a push on rubber connector on the other for oval and non threaded taps.

I bought my 11 litre watering can from Leclerc in Capbreton, I managed to find a short piece of flexible plastic tubing (similar to the pipe used for the sink drain) it fits in the spout with a bit of tape around it. It is very easy to pour into the water filler & quick.

We don't have levelling blocks, don't need them, as we generally fins a level site and if it is a bit of a slope, and we are there for more than one night, I use the rear air suspension set up that is fitted to our 'van, which helps a little bit.

We also take a bucket, as it can be used for many purposes, one use is for topping up the water tank, as we have a trap door giving access to the fresh water tank under the floor .:rolleyes2:
