It depends how you roll really....

We only usually have a general idea where we might be going. We take the "All the Aires" book, we have all our POI's loaded up on the satnav and on the laptop (using Autoroute and for which we have a satnav dongle), we plan our route the night before on the laptop. The wife watches the laptop on route and I watch the satnav, the satnav comes into it's own when we get somewhere and don't fancy staying, on it I can quickly find alternatives and we check them out till we find something we like. I have an android and use that in particular to alert me as to when we are in a FON area, then we park up and do whatever we need to on the net (usually find out where the best weather is!)

I use the same as Skar, e.g. Add Canalsman's POI's to the satnav for directions to the nearest. Autoroute on laptop with POI's added via the 'Import data wizard' under the 'Data' tab showing spots coming up in your general direction - works just fine for us... in fact I have a campsites folder on the laptop so you can add Caravan Club, CSMA, Wild Camp all in one hit, then look at the town you're heading for and have a choice!

Just buy "all the aires" and then you can enjoy watching the countryside go by instead of having your head stuck in a mass of electronics.

MacDonalds for free internet.

Enjoy your holiday.
