campsite free wifi access

Yes it will. By the look of it 500 metres max range and that will be optimistic. So you may want to go for something more powerful to ensure you get a good signal.

I bought one off ebay from Hong Kong for about £20 which seems to have an enormous range. Also very useful in France (MacDonalds, etc.) so you can sit in your van in the car park. Works a treat!

I don't use a booster and have no problem accessing

Was on a site recently in Wales, couldn't access net from the van, so took laptop into reception where it was ok ish, but slow.
So thinking I need one just in case, cheaper the better, but it must work.

Can you remember which one ?
I'd like to compare specs.

It's only a patch antenna so if you have a router or external WIFI device it will help, but for dongles or built in WIFI, forget it.

A few years a go I added a couple of pages to my website that explains about Wifi, 3G and a few other areas, there is advice on there.

That depends how far you are from the router (usually at reception).

But even with a booster you still need good line of sight to the router. It isn't a magic wand, and trees/buildings in the way will still degrade the signal so as to make it too weak even with a booster.

PS, under good conditions, I, Geonomad and others have connected to Wifi over 10 miles away, but for free connection to FON or other Wifi like cloud, 5-800M is about the max

Hi Pete
looked at your site, and maybe it's a wifi extender that I need.
I don't really follow the 3g bit, is it something about connecting an internet enabled phone and using that as a router ?
I don't want to subscribe to Bt Fon, I want to be able to effectively use an un-secured (free) wifi point, just like at Maci D's !
I've got a sony viao laptop with built in wifi, pretty standard I expect.

thanks to all who've replied, keep 'em coming !

Hi Allen,

something like the wifi booster I've got on my site will do.

The one I sell is omni directional, ie you don't have to point it at the base station, makes life easier BUT is not so sensitive, you can't win it always

Call me on 07979 508286 if you just want to discuss options, quite happy to talk.

This is the exact bit of kit you need. Motorhome WiFi | Improving Wireless Range for Caravans and Campervans The one on ebay I dont think will be much good.

I know the guy who runs this business and he knows his stuff and is very helpful.

I have the original Repeat IT antenna and also the one of Motorhomewifi. It is probably the best device you will find anywhere on the market. I have frequently connected to houses or bars over a mile away and the record is 4 miles over water although I think the chap that runs the site has got much further. Dead easy to setup as well.

Hi Pete

I don't want to subscribe to Bt Fon,

Allen

If you are a BT customer and have your broadband provided by them you are automatically subscibed to BT FON and Openzone for free. Armed with your password and username you can access many private residences as FON/Openzone hotspots.....whether the residents know it or not!

BT Fon / Openzone in the UK is so good I dumped my Vodafone Dongle and now just use the wifi antenna and use other peoples BT Broadband for free! When I was testing the Antenna this afternoon from the bedroom window at home I can pickup quite clearly four BT openzone / fon sites in our village which I could use if I choose.

you could just get hold of a painters extending pole
and a large usb cable and stick ur dongle to that like an extended ariel

if that helps you would be above all vans and other obstructions. :)

best to wrap it in a plastic incase it rains :)

It is true that the clearer the line of sight the better with a wifi extender. It makes a huge difference. The Repeat IT model I have has a mount that goes on the top of the ladder but it means I can only swivel it 180 degreess. The newer model from Motorhome wifi can be supplied with a very nifty suction mount which can be rotated 360 degrees so you can stick it on the roof and turn it towards the signal. Dont forget to take it off though before you move on!

ah but if you goto place like strontian on the west coast of scotland you will find the btfon is kak and 3g works better,

reason is all the bt phone cables are wrapped around trees all along the road, and when u get a signal its usually 1-2 bars if yer lucky.

They have 3G on the west coast of Scotland? This was another reason I dumped the vodafone dongle. 90% of the time I only every got 2G which is just rubbish. I have an iphone now so if I dont get online with the antenna which is unusual and my record of 4 miles was believe it or not on one of the scottish islands I just use the iPhone. This solution also works abroad in any country by the way although FON is thin on the ground in mainland Europe.

I've used wi fi without a booster in some towns, Monmouth was the last one, it was the same speed as using a dongle.

if you own a bt bb hub you can opt out of using it for btfon

p,s applecross and the surrounding are is a bit sketchy for any mobile signals.

its a granite bed rock u cant get past.

great if u dont want to be disturbed from anyone around you, nightmare if u breakdown :)

where did i put my axe sharpber :mad2:
