Camping holiday

Thinking of going to Scotland for a camping holiday but the weather is putting me off. 2 adults + 2 children. Any suggestions?

I went last month for 2 weeks amidst a forecast of nothing but rain, rain, rain. The weather was true to its forecast for the first days when the rain didn't stop at all and then developed into a storm but, following that and not predicted by the guesswork of forecasts, it changed.

My advice would be to simply go for it, be prepared, take plenty waterproofs and make the best of whatever the weather throws at you. I never expected my trip to end in a heatwave!

Had a holiday in North Wales back in the eighties, Toyota Hiace, six children, one Alsation dog, frame tent, beautiful meadow, fabulous. Despite the fact that we lost pillows and duvet off the roofrack on the LLangollen pass! Loved it all, ashamed I've not been back. Must get back there soon.

If it doesn't rain in Scotland at this time of year, then you suffer with the midges, if it does rain, then you still suffer with the midges!

But I still love Scotland.

Swapped the Hiace for an Autotrail, six kids all grown up, got to try Scotland, midges and all!

Come to Wales it never rains here.

I have to say that we have just spent 3 weeks in Wales, and most of the time it was dry!! The same thing happened 3 years ago. Don't know if we were just lucky, cos every time I see the forecast there's usually rain over Wales, just like Cornwall!!

There is a site near Arisaig, Invercaimbe, where they have a kind of micro climate, but get very booked up in summer. I think a lot depends on the age of your children, what they like doing, and WHEN you are going. The midges in Scotland are definitely a problem (Avon pink Skin so soft is supposed to deter them) unless you go before June or after August. I liked Shell Island in Wales, but it can get a bit grotty in high season and at weekends.

I'm sure someone will come up with something!!
