I always kinda assumed littles ones were campervans and big ones were motorhomes, no idea if thats correct and if so where the cut off is

What does the V5 say?

Mine still says van but hopefully that will have changed when i get around to finishing it. I think the dvla then reclassify it as motorised caravan. So they are sitting on the fence.

No difference, just depends what you have heard/been taught/got used to over the years.

Could be a hint of tongue in cheek snobbery? :drive:
I thought that a coachbuilt is a motorhome and a van conversion a campervan.
I usually refer to my vehicle as a 'van.

There are many names: van conversion, caravanette, camper, motor camper, RV, motorhome, campervan, truck camper and motorcaravan. I am sure there are others.

We've got a Kontiki motorhome and often joke when friends call it a campervan with our reply being "motorhome darling..motorhome"!!! :lol-053:

It's just a bit of tongue in cheek snobbery!!! Like you, we always refer to it as "the van"!

My mates call mine "the beer truck" as its a Chevy RV and has a full size fridge in it, its getting an interior make over soon at which point I expect its name will have "pimip" added to the front.

I really don't care about the resale value and its typically boring "old fart" motor home decoration inside.

Needs more mirror balls, velvet walls and fur carpets in my opinion.

It depends on your postcode. I live in S17 (Sheffield) and therfore have a MOTORHOME.

Other's in lesser areas of Sheffield have campervans!!! :p

For the DVLA to change the classification on the V5 it must meet certain criteria, one of the main ones being that it must actually look like a motor caravan from the outside, ie, windows, service hatches/vents, livery etc.

The advantages of having it registered as a motor caravan is that it then has a class 4 MOT, which is cheaper than a class 7 commercial vehicle. Cheaper motor insurance is also likely.

RV

Hi hextal,

Just call it a RV.

When we lived in France we, and everyone else who owned one had a camping car unless it was a smaller van conversion when they were, I believe I remember. marketed as fourgons (vans).

It was cheap, and needs redecorating as its past its best, looks original 80's in there and it only has to suit me and occasionally my 10 year old daughter when she stays over AND it has the ridiculous chevy small block V8 in it so its hardly sensible, im not gonna mess with the outside as i want to be able to get onto normal campsites sometimes, but inside i think "Essex nightclub" will be the new "thing" :D

Here in oxford we also have a motor home darling, but it gets called the van - which does get confusing as himself has a Toyota van for work also called the van.....

Simple!
Campervan is what even the most luxurious motorhome is called when some local councillor, paper or "interested party" wants them banned from their area.

No idea what mine would be classed as, motorcaravan on V5 but we just call it the "Truck" still you can't get much posher it was previously used by Her Majesty's.................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Sorry, this is incorrect,I have a 7500Kg ex prison lorry, converted to motorhome. The V5 is for private heavy goods, the MOT is class 4, based on the fact that the inspector can clearly identify that it is fitted out as living area. Insured as self build motorhome.

Also the DVLA are not responsible for MOT classification, that is the remit of VOSA.

Sounds good to me, on mine I had the body type changed to motorcaravan by satisfying the whims of DVLA and as you say taxation class is phgv.
Class 4 MOT, had to get mine changed and MOT'd before I could drive it as it was classed as a psv when it was prison transport.
