There’s a quaint harbour town not far from Calais, Gravelines I think and area around wissant I think I recall is suitable. 🤔

All I know so far is we are going all the way down chasing that sun … that’s the only loose plan we have at the moment. We are not going until summer but it’s only my 2nd time . Other half used to drive out there all the time but mainly knows are the lorry stops etc

Sounds like my kind of planing too. :)

I usually do a late (or very early) crossing, book anything between 10.30 pm and 1 am. Means I can miss London traffic and leave north London 8 pm ish, get to train, have a nap on train, then good for a few hours driving.
I use truck stops all the time when heading south if in a hurry to get to where I want to go.

Thats not a recommendation though, and certainly not everyones cuppa.

Gravelines is my usual stop from Calais heading north, but that's in the wrong direction for you - if I'm heading south, then I usually stop at the Baie de Somme motorway aire. It's a lot less grim than it sounds, quiet flat parking, bit of a nature reserve to wander around, showers if you want them and coffee before you set off in the morning. Does the job for an overnight.

You can not beat a good French Routier I shell be using one or two when we go over there in May

I always make my way away from Calais to a little town called Arques to a small aire by a lake. That way there’s ample walking space for me and Molly on arrival and first thing in the morning.

We stopped at the Leclerc Hypermarket at Lumbres in June 2022 after taking the Eurotunnel at about 22:30. The hypermarket is about 30 miles south of Calais and has dedicated motorhome parking bays [alongsode the Fuel Station], where there are also grey, black waste disposal and fresh water top ups, EXCEPT on a Sunday when it's closed

We stop a Whatton by the river. Room for 20 MHs and it's nice and quiet. Nice walk along the river and watch the barges. 20 minutes inland from the ferries / train. It's also a free Aire. There are a couple of local bars over the bridge and a supermarket nearby.

We try and make it to Berck Sur Mer, if the aire is busy we head back to Carrefour supermarket. They have an area set aside for Camping Cars, FOC. Berck is also a nice seaside time to wander around.
Ps, an hour drive from tunnel.

A short walk in the morning for breakfast by the sea and a beautiful beach.

When we go to France and are heading south we usually stay at Cap Gris Nez, 50.869078893648926, 1.5866877412644813

I second Baie De Somme especially if you just want to sleep, Wissant is ok and very near to Calais but unless you want to go to the town it can be a bit busy.

Depends where you're heading, but Wissant is our go to. Very easy for Calais or the tunnel.

If you're coming from the South, perhaps Hardelot Plage? There's a basic aire at GPS (50.6262, 1.5819) -- 45 minutes from the Chunnel -- we stopped at in 2018. It's popular but there's enough room probably for 40 vans. When we got to the Chunnel, Border Control wanted to know where we'd spent the previous night as illegal immigrants had been climbing onto the roofs etc. of vans that had overnighted close to the terminal.

LeClerc at Lumbres is our first stopping point regardless of which direction we are travelling. Fill with fuel, fill with food, empty any grey or black if we haven’t already leaving Arques. And pick up a Reglo mobile data sim, they really are cheap as chips. Sorted.
