Decided to get a new sat nav, been using my old Tomtom 930 but maps way out of date, also have a cheap ebay sat nav. Thanks to somebody on here telling me to look at the facebook group for Novatech sat nav users I was able to revive the sat nav & update the maps to 2017. Although it worked most of the time occasionally it would decide not to talk to us except to tell me when I was speeding. Also the screen is getting less responsive. I'm looking at the Xgody 884 or the 886 models. The 884 has 128mb of ram & 16Gb storage whilst the 886 has 256mb ram but only 8Gb storage. As I can update the storage with an SD card am I better to go for the one with more ram as this should make it run faster? Price difference isn't much but it seems there are lots of Xgody models, not sure how their model numbers work but seems logical that the 886 would be newer than the 884 but not sure.

Depends how big the program is. Excess ram does not mean it will run quicker it just means that it's got lots of unused memory. I take it it is running WinCE and using IGO Primo software.

Have you considered updating the tomtom?, they are still a good sat nav with the latest maps and software on, they are not difficult to do with the right knowledge;), I still use a GO730 with truck software and maps on as a back up to my GO 6000 Trucker, the older Tomtoms still handle POI's better than the newer ones

It is running the IGO Primo on Windows CE, as to updating the Tomtom its just not worth it, the Tomtom is now so outdated it just doesn't have the features that the truck sat nav has. I already have the truck & the car software on the Tomtom but the hardware is now past its useful life. I have had both sat navs running & the Tomtom takes a lot longer to find the satellites also it takes a lot longer before it recalculates the route if you deviate than the Primo software. Also at £38 for a new sat nav with free maps for life its well worth it, Tomtom maps of Europe are almost £50.

I would be interested in the Tomtom if you want to sell but I could update it for you (FOC) if you want to try that, if you haven't connected to Tomtom Home on your PC at least once a week then it hasn't received the QuickGPSfix update, this is the information of satellite positions for the next seven days, it is something not many people do, my go730 finds the satellites instantly and recalculates as fast as the new one, think about it and PM me if you want it updating, it is worth you trying it but if not let me know how much you want for it

Does it really need to be updated EVERY week, that seems ridiculous.

Using my NozaTec for the last 4 years I have only updated the maps, I don't think there are any firmware GPS updates for it but it is still fine getting a quick fix.

Yes every week, but you also get the map updates, speed camera updates and everything else, with the latest truck software on they work as new as long as you do this, if you don't they slow down a lot, I have bought a lot of tomtoms and got them working as new to sell on another forum, fairytooth does it on here so I have never offered it

The map updates I think only fix mistakes on the maps you have installed, it doesn't give you any new roads. As to doing anything with my old Tomtom I'll just stick it in the car, still handy for finding postcodes. As somebody else said the cheapo ebay sat nav finds the satellites almost instantly, also realises if you aren't on route & recalculates quickly. The 7" screen also fits nicely on the Fiat dashboard clipboard holder. Don't know when Fiat introduced the tablet holder into the flip up panel but it works well. I might get around to getting some newer maps for the TT but probably just keep it as it is. With mobiles & cheap mobile data packages I wonder that the big sat nav companies such as Garmin & Tomtom can still charge what they do, there are so many good free apps which will work on & offline apps that will do as good of a job for most people.

BTW thanks for the offer of an update but I've done it before just haven't bothered for a few years.

Nozatec map updates do give new roads. Not infallibly, though. There is a new Norwich bypass being built this year, with lots of smart new tarmac and it looks complete, but one section isn't open yet. iGo maps tried to send me down that section the week before last.
iGO ahead of time not behind.[emoji106]

With Tomtom I think you only get new roads if you pay for new maps. It should always be that the sat nav is just a driving aid & not always 100% correct, common sense should always be used. When we were at Cite d'Europe recently I set the destination for both sat navs to the tunnel entrance, both seemed to take me on a tour of the area showing it to be between 8-10 kms away. I had to put a waypoint in to get it to go the correct way 1.8kms, the Tomtom however was still taking some obscure route showing it to be 5kms.

What's the most stupid route a sat nav has tried to take you? When we were in Spain, I think around Calpe & were heading down to La Manga the sat nav thought the best quickest route was via Denia to Ibiza (or Majorca), I tried adding waypoints but it would still think this was the only way.
