3 ways to pay
1] pre-paid - or pre- pagamento.
this is usually well signed, you pay the cashier and either an attendant or you pump the fuel
2] attendant
they pump it , you pay them , they pay the cashier
3] pre-set buttons
my favourite, there are 3 [i think] buttons on the pump, 0, 5, 10
if you want 15 euros of fuel, leave the pump holstered, press the 10 and the 5, 15 comes up and you start pumping. when it gets near 15, the pump slows and finally cuts out exactly on the 15 euros- very handy if that's all you've got on you

If people havnt figured out how to buy fuel they wont get to Portugal any way:lol-049::lol-049:

They also have self service, just managed to do that at Jumbo this morning. Diesel now 1.239 per litre but for the rich our local BP is charging 1.399. Autogas is now also up to 62.9. The price of crude has been rising of late and prices may well go up again.

Forgot to mention thst there are also pay at the pump machines in a few places but the last time I tried to use one they only took Portuguese issued cards.

If you are stuck carry a siphon hose, there will be a big truck somewhere.:lol-053::scared:

Or numero 4. Autoservicio, pour my own and pay in the quiosco or tienda etc.
even if sign posted as pay first, when they spot my van they know I'd have to be loco to attempt a drive away, all they'd need to do is jog past to roadblock me !

Fill your tank to the brim in Spain, as near to the border as possible. It's cheaper.
When in Portugal google nearest Intermarché supermarkets, the larger ones have cheaper fuel. Always fill up ,if you come across one.
In Tavira, there's an autogas point just opposite the Continente shopping mall.

Just west of Villa Real do Santo Antonio , look for the blue elephant car wash. Their gas is much cheaper than the BP a mile further down the road.

I've often wondered why UK petrol stations seem to be the only ones on the planet where you can't preselect the amount wanted, always end up 1p over and they always want that 1p!

Get even.
Make sure that you always fill to £X.99 ... And then you can get all those penny coins back.. Yorkshire economics.

I use Kiwi economics,1s and 2s should just be abolished....
While on that subject,is it true that copper wire was invented by two Yorkshire men fighting over a penny?

Or cover the 1p by handing over a note, make them work for it.

You lot can laugh all you want, but I just filled up in Spain for 1.26 Euro the one before that I missed was 1.22. So what you ask , well I are now at Gibraltar anthem filling station is 80pence a litre for diesel. An I only have enough room in the tank for 8 litres max.
Sod it. Next stop is Portugal but I bet the best I can get will 1.28 or so. I should have hung on but never thought Gib would be cheaper than the others.

Any fuel in Portugal is cheaper than anything sold by BP. The Jumbo in Lagoa has gas at 62.9 cents at the moment

Makes you wonder why you bother doesn't it Nigel.
does a bit- read somewhere that some people had never heard of pay before you pump, and others had never seen the pre-set buttons before
thought it might be helpful to clear that up .. ah well

Gib is always cheaper than Portugal Spain or France, but whether it really
is worthwhile crossing the frontier to buy it depends on 2 factors viz.
border holdups, which can often be the case, and obviously what you
can get in the tank at the time,
